SCREAMING AT CONJURING 2!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Lot of sequels at the movies lately. You’ve got Independence Day: Resurgence, Finding Dori, TMNT: Out of the Shadows, Captain America: Civil War, and (what we went to check out) Conjuring 2. Fresh back from the theater, we thought we’d take some time to shoot the shit on this super-hyped scarefest that’s got everyone talking about heart attacks in the cineplex. There will be spoilers, so read with caution.

First off, Conjuring 2 was good, but not a “Wow!” for us. Mainly because it wasn’t much different from the first one. If you recall, the first movie was about the Warrens, a famous paranormal tag-team couple from the ’70s, helping free a young girl from the possessive grips of an evil spirit. In the sequel, the Warrens have sworn off anymore investigations after their experience in the Amityville house but jump back in the saddle when they hear a girl in London is bullied non-stop by the ghost of old man Wilkins. So, once again we’re watching them save a kid being haunted by an evil force with a lot of the same bells and whistles trying to scare us from the last movie. Possessions, creepy sounds, and shit flying everywhere.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are perfectly cast as the Warrens in these movies. They’re solid performers whose relationship is nothing short of convincing and successfully give you horror heroes worth rooting for. Their chemistry on screen is only boosted by director James Wan’s eye for slick cinematography, a script rich in character, and the perfect rhythm of jump scares the film seems edited to.

Our only beef with this whole thing was the tension being about as thin as a haunted house attraction around Halloween. Based on what happened in the first Conjuring, our gang had already bet nobody was going to die, and it would be more about scare than terror which is exactly what happened. It’s hard to feel worried for anyone when you know it’s all going to end in sunshine and rainbows for everybody at the end.

Even the ghosts were a little disappointing, but it’s not for lack of effort. Old man Wilkin’s ghost was filmed in a very effective way, but didn’t feel like it was pushed enough or in the right ways. Most the time he’s creeping around saying “Boo!,” but when the filmmakers push the envelope and seemingly make him more like a Ghostbusters villain as the morphing Crooked Man who taunts children with nursery rhymes, it was too much distracting CGI that had us thinking of Tim Burton characters from Alice in Wonderland.

There is a second supernatural threat that turns out to be a demon disguised as an evil nun that’s actually manipulating the haunting for its benefit, but this too was good and bad. The filmmakers elevate the sequel by giving us a totally unexpected turn of events when we learn this demon is using old man Wilkin’s ghost as a smokescreen so it could possess the girl, but that twist ends as soon as it starts without any explanation, leaving us hanging with what felt like some bigger plot out of a season of Supernatural. Why did the demon go to such complex lengths to get the girl? Was the demon originally from the Amityville house and attach itself to Lorraine Warren? Why did it bother telling Lorraine its name without being compelled, ultimately handing her its #1 weakness? We have so many questions that aren’t from criticism but interest in something we found to be the most interesting part of the movie they barely went into.

All in all, this isn’t a movie we’re running to tell all our friends to hurry and see, and we definitely don’t think it lives up to all the hype on TV or in the reviews. However, it was well made, and the acting was superb which does rate it higher than your average fright pic. If they had made us feel like anyone could possibly die at anytime and put more thought into the demonic end of this story, it could have been something real special. But we rate it 4/5!

SCREAMING AT FRANKENHOOKER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Hot off the heels of the successful Bloodbath & Beyond crossover, we present to you the newest and craziest chapter in the Buzzkill’s Revenge saga yet with your favorite gang of horror hosts reviewing the cult-hit, Frankenhooker!

We can still remember hearing rumors about this schlockbuster long ago, and how excited we were when we finally got to see it in all its shocking glory years later. Many filmmakers have given the Frankenstein story their own creative spin, but only Frank Henenlotter’s version about a crazed electrician re-animating his mowed down girlfriend with hooker body-parts has ever stood out enough to make us want to run and tell all our friends about it. Raunchy, gritty, and full of fun, every horror fan needs Frankenhooker in their collection.

We also have more horrific personalities making guest appearances in this episode and want to give a quick shout out to those folks. Jay from Bloodbath & Beyond is back along with our friend Grim Reaper from Your Final Answer, and we’re lucky enough to share the screen with the Horror Guru and the Horror Addicts who have been very cool to collaborate with. They’re all amazing talents in horror entertainment, so please click their links below to check out their Youtube channels, but make sure to come back here for more servings of Screaming Soup!

SCREAMING AT A BLOODBATH & BEYOND CROSSOVER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Grab an extra dish, ’cause yer gettin’ served up not 1 but 2 reviews of The Stuff! Wipe that confused look off yer face, we ain’t backtracking our own review for a 2nd go ’round. No, sir. We’ve been in talks with the fine folks over at Bloodbath & Beyond, and before you know it, one thing led to another and Wooowee! We got ourselves a bona fide crossover of unprecedented mayhem!

Being the web’s first and only animated horror hosts means a lot of firsts, and this is one of them. Never before have live action horror hosts mixed with fully animated ones, and the result is laugh out loud epic. So epic, this crossover could only be done as a 2-parter with both sets of hosts visiting each other’s sets. Both parts are below, and we would suggest starting with the Screaming Soup! half as part 1, so you get a full understandin’ of what’s happenin’ before switching over to BBB’s half of the crossover.

We give a joyful YEEEHAAAAW! to Bloodbath & Beyond for decidin’ to take this steer by the horns and help make a memorable video we’re sure ya’ll will enjoy. We encourage you to check out more of their vids on their Youtube channel HERE, but come back to us for more helpings of Screaming Soup!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT UPCOMING CROSSOVERS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We can already tell ya, this is going to be a fun month for Screaming Soup! Not only are we going to bring you our favorite review of Season 3 on 6/20/16, but we’re also playing host to several macabre guests we’ve asked to join us for some crossover antics!

We don’t want to spoil the surprise for who these guests are just yet, but the majority of them are other popular horror movie reviewers you more than likely heard of, and they’ll be making cameos in the next episode which takes our gang to the Tailhouse — the Crosslands #1 stripjoint! We push the animation further, give ya plenty of cartoon babes to oogle, review one of the best B-movies of all time, and share the screen with some of the hottest talents in the business. It’s going to be unforgettable.

In the meantime, we are ready to tell you we’ve been hard at work on a crossover special with another team of superstars . . . Bloodbath & Beyond! Yessir, we’ve been talking a lot with these guys lately, and we both came to the obvious conclusion we needed to do a crossover. Live action meets animation, its a true clash of worlds as we step outside our norms, attempting something we’ve never done before. I won’t say how we crossover or what we’re going to review, but it’ll be like a 2-parter with fans needing to watch vids on both our Youtube channels to get the full story. We’re aiming to release that by Friday, 6/10/16.

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT CLIMBING THE LADDER OF SUCCESS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s not always easy to think of stuff to post in this blog every week, but we happen to be inspired by something one of you said to us recently and wanted to share our thoughts on it. A loyal Scream Freak saw the latest Screaming Soup! episode, told us how much they enjoyed it, but then expressed some frustration that took us by surprise.

In a nutshell, they were baffled at how little of a following we have so far, and are even more perplexed at the low number of views our videos have for something they think is such great quality.

We of course responded to the comment, but wanted to expand on our feelings a little more in the blog here. First and foremost we make Screaming Soup! for fun as artists who are compelled to create, and channel that energy through our love for all things horror and animation. We’ve essentially taken everything we’ve ever enjoyed from comics to toys and videogames and brought all that together in what we think is a cool concept for an entertaining show we regularly invite others to enjoy with us.

Now, most everybody wants to make a living doing what they love, and we’re no different. We dream of the day our labor of love could hit big and elevate us somehow from living paycheck to paycheck to a means of supporting our families comfortably. We want to see Screaming Soup! popular enough to be the next Mystery Science Theater 3000 or Monstervision for the 21st century, achieving a milestone as the first fully animated horror host (that we’re aware of) in history. We’d love to have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles explosion of success and launch a Screaming Soup! brand with Deadwest action figures, Billy plushies, TPMummy Halloween costumes, etc. Of course all that’s heavily dependent on a demanding fan base, and we’re doing our best to get the word out about our show to as many horror fans as we can on a daily basis through Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Channel Awesome, and Youtube crossovers.

But until that boom of life altering success happens, we’re just ambitious artists happy to be making wild, gross, and x-rated horror toons while shooting the shit about movies, and are deeply grateful for the fans we have gained so far who believe in our show and characters as much as we do. Thank you. So, keep your fangs crossed, dream big, but in the meantime . . . have fun!

SCREAMING AT MONSTER MAN!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Lock your doors and turn the lights off, ’cause it’s time for an all new episode of Screaming Soup! Yessir, we’ve officially stepped out of the Howl-Inn Grub & Spirits and hit the open road of the Crosslands where its truly highways or dieways. Clues are given for future storylines, we have the most horror icon cameos on the show to date, and we finally get a lead for how to kick Buzzkill out of the picture for good.

This time around, we review a unique little film called Monster Man that’s all about a monster killing people with a monster truck. ’bout time! 2 buds (who we call dumb and dumber light) race to a wedding to confess their love for a slut, but get stopped by bangin’ hitchhikers, mutilated hicks, septic shakes, and Yoda sexcapades. As funny as it is scary, you gotta skip down and watch this review NOW!

A special note about this episode that’s also a spoiler (you’ve been warned!), we just wanted to point out we animate our shows a year in advance for scheduling reasons, and this was produced well before Wes Craven passed away last year. So, if you maybe get a little confused by Wes’ appearance or anything he says, that’s why. It was amazing how so many unexpected emotions  came over us here at Screaming Soup! when we heard of his passing, proving just how much of an impression he left on our lives for a guy we never had the pleasure to meet. We’ll always miss Wes and treasure his amazing work he shared with us over the years.

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT WEREWOLVES AND CAMEOS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Woo-doggy, have you got it made this week with a double scoop of goodies! Not only are we premiering another tribute video for your horrific pleasure, but you also get some more animated mayhem as we make a guest appearance on Grim Reaper’s “Your Final Answer!”

Tackling the first tribute video to follow the Bruce Campbell shout-out we put together last Halloween, we realized these vids didn’t have to be spotlighting horror celebrities every time and could be about anything we think deserved attention. Jump scares, screams, rubber bats, whatever! With that said, we skipped purchasing someone’s entire film career for creating the coolest montage of their life in movies, and decided to celebrate werewolf transformations instead. Yessir, we went through our whole collection of monster movies and pieced together every super morphing,  hair sprouting, gore-tastic scene of man becoming beats we could find and pieced it all together in one Ramones jamming vid. You can check it out below and if you want to know where the clips came from, you can check out the movies on the vid’s page HERE.

In other news, Grim Reaper asked us to stop by and make another legendary appearance on his show “Your Final Answer,” and we hopefully don’t disappoint. That guest spot can also be seen below, and be sure to visit Reaper’s website (paradeofhorrorables.com), and subscribe to his Youtube page!!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT A HORROR WE’D REMAKE!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! You know, we’re not big fans of Hollywood remaking classic horror movies, ’cause so many of them were good the first time around! For example, The Omen, Fright Night, Nightmare on Elm St., maybe The Fog . . . but then there are those memorable monster movies that were poorly executed and deserving of redemption. One such film we always wanted to see remade or even remake ourselves would be the Incredible Melting Man . . . why’re you laughin’?

We reviewed sploosh face in season 2 of Screaming Soup! and had plenty of time to brainstorm what would make it a better movie after pointing out everything wrong with it. Despite its problem deciding whether or not it was going to be a horror parody, endless slow-mo running, silly scenes of seniors snatching lemons, and hambone acting, the concept of a guy melting away has a lot to offer if done right. The movie is already famous for make-up artist Rick Baker’s special effects, but if coupled with a convincing character for the audience to connect with, this could have easily been The Fly of its day.

If made in our vision, we’d still have the accident in outer space with the astronaut, resulting in his fatal meltdown. It starts slowly at first, but accelerates and gets worse, forcing him to be held for observation on some kind of military base. As he melts, his brain gets more and more unstable, making him attack people whose plasma slows down his melting, motivating him to kill more people out of desperation for preserving his own life. Sounds more or less the same movie so far, but the biggest difference would be developing the astronaut’s character more through conversations with friends and loved ones during his stages of meltdown. In the original, he barely spoke and just ran around like a mad gorilla taking chunks out of people in the boonies. He looked cool melting, but echoes of his deadly mission and sad stares at women through windows wasn’t enough to make you shed a tear for his demise as a human puddle by the end. Relationships, interacting with people, sharing thoughts and fears would easily bring the audience closer with his grim journey, making them actually give a shit when he dies. Regarding the effects, we’d definitely put him in situations that makes his condition worse. Like having to loose flesh squeezing his gooey body through things to attack someone or have to dissolve in some sewer water when escaping the military base, loosing limbs along the way. Just harmful situations that make sense and elevates the scares and gore of his appearance as the movie progresses. Lastly, wherever he goes, its with purpose like maybe returning home to be with his wife who he finds banging his best friend/doctor from the base which sends him into even more of a rattled rage. This has a lot of possibilities for being a really good gore flick  . . .

But then again, what do we know? We like killer tomato movies!

SCREAMING AT FROGS AND SQUIRM!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Time to peel your eyelids back and take in the unholy glory that is Screaming Soup! as we hurl up the next exciting episode continuing the Buzzkill’s Revenge saga. Yessir, this episode’s packed with mecha-devil bull rides, lover’s spat, vision quests, drunken rage, Graboids, frogs, and worms! All for your squeamish pleasure . . .

This time ’round, we’re reviewing a double feature of 2 nature gone bad flicks from the ’70s, Frogs (starring Sam “Dodge Ram” Elliot) and Squirm. We can’t remember what exactly motivated us to review these 2 lackluster films to begin with, but each certainly offers up its own form of B-grade entertainment for us to riff on. Or should we say for Billy and Tequila Worm to riff on! That’s right, these 2 Screaming Soup! alum get their 15 seconds of fame as guest hosts filling in, and we think they did a pretty awesome job at it! Just watch the new episode below and see fer yourself!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT THINGS SOON TO COME!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Glad you came back, because we’ve been beaming with good news to tell ya about this week! Horror hosting is always fun, but it’s even better when done with the right group of people which is why we always have regular cast members coming and going for every adventure. But outside our show are countless other crazy personalities who’ve also taken it upon themselves to share their opinions with the public on all things scary, and we’ve been lucky enough to network with some of them.

We’re not sayin’ we’re exchanging agent’s numbers and sippin’ seltzer water over overpriced salads while discussing business opportunities, but we have been in the talks with several hosts about crossovers & cameos and such. Of course, this can be difficult at times to arrange given everything we do is animated and that takes a lot of time, but we believe in the entertainment value of a lot of these projects and really want to give you Scream Freaks something special. So, we’re really looking forward to some shows and characters we’re gonna crisscross with through the rest of this season, and excited several of them will be appearing in episode 26 premiering in June.

And speaking of future episodes, be here next week, 4/20/16, because an all NEW episode of Screaming Soup! is coming out and we pick right back up with the epic that is Buzzkill’s Revenge while unexpected guests help review a double billing of Frogs and Squirm!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup!
