SCREAMING AT A SPECIAL QnA WITH KANE HODDER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Y’all may recall awhile back our comin’ face to face with one of horror’s heaviest hitters, and what a bitter sweet encounter that was. Kane Hodder blew through our neck of the woods fer an appearance at our favorite toy chest fer yesteryear and today’s playful plastics, Toy Federation, and as with many of the store’s guests, we anxiously anticipated an interview with Kane that would shed some light on his more obscure body of work outside the Jason and Victor Crowley movies. With him bein’ a professional fall guy turned monster suit actor turned regular thespian, we had no shortage of questions regardin’ his stints on popular TV shows like Who’s the Boss? and experiences actin’ ‘longside such high profile talents as Charlize Theron and Steven Seagal.

If ya read that blog by Mandy, however, then ya already know our attempt at that interview was nothin’ short of disappointin’. Kane just politely refused to do an interview and that was that, respectfully. He still answered any and all our questions from the word on ‘nother Muck movie to why Death House sucked so hard it blew, but just not in front of a camera. Mind ya, Kane was still a fantastic guy to meet, and we even spent the next day hangin’ ’round him as he signed autographs and jump scared unsuspectin’ customers, but we always regretted not bein’ able to add him to our growin’ roster of interviews.

Fast forward a few months, our second chance came, and we death gripped that sucker for all its worth!

Kane was swingin’ back by Toy Federation fer ‘nother store signin’, but this time he’d cap the night off with a showy QnA ‘fore an outdoor screenin’ of Jason Takes A Cruise To Canada. After makin’ arrangements fer us to host the QnA on the store’s behalf, we made sure to have cameras on the scene and capture the night’s festivities with Kane’s awareness. After a humorous half hour or so of him tellin’ stories from Hollywood and answerin’ fans’ all too familiar questions, we finally had the footage we needed to make an interview special!

Unlike our usual interviews with celebrities in a corner of the store bein’ asked a handful of questions, this video was more challengin’ to produce, ’cause it was an actual event and called fer a more creative presentation which is fun and different. Takin’ a laughable out of context approach akin to the kinda comedy Space Ghost: Coast to Coast is best known for, we dropped Kane into a completely animated world and exaggeratin’ the events that unfolded that night with our show’s characters in place of Kane’s real life cheer section.

A perfect example of this exaggeration is our overreaction to Kane’s answer to whether or not he’s ever met one of his own heroes from the silver screen. Our one and only deep cut question ‘fore the fans could claim him, and he confusingly talks ’bout how blessed he is to have played Jason so many times. Did he mishear us or forget what the question was altogether? We’ll never know, but it makes fer great comedy we hope y’all enjoy while learnin’ somethin’ new ’bout the man recognized for the most kills on film.

SCREAMING AT THE BYE BYE MAN!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! So far so good with the war between Troma and Full Moon, but as fun as watchin’ mutants and aliens beat the shit out of each other is, it’s good to get away sometimes, you know? This past weekend we took shelter at the Screamplex for a breather and caught a flick some of you have been warned not to think or speak of called The Bye Bye Man. We walked out the theater pretty impressed with it, Mandy especially. So much so, she asked if she could share her thoughts on the monster flick with ya, so here it is:

The Bye Bye Man

“Let’s start with the name.

I got chills the first time I saw a cardboard prop bearing the seemingly innocuous moniker. Years of horror archived in my brain referenced that moment when a child lets the grown-ups know something is amiss. Due to little ones’ limited vocabulary, they tend to name the impending evil something familiar—perhaps something they’ve heard in a fairy tale or a nursery rhyme. We wonder if the child, who’s officially become prey, has any idea what kind of shit storm is about to rain down on his life, and we know the adults are clueless.

If you’re thinking of poor Carol Anne in Poltergeist or hearing “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you” right now—you’ve got the right idea but the wrong movie. The Internet is teeming with lofty language about The Bye Bye Man, a film critics are calling banal and derivative. Speaking as someone who often fights the undertow of the mainstream, I have to say there was lots to like about this tale of a relentless supernatural slasher:

  • Douglas Smith’s performance – As leading man, Elliot, the former Percy Jackson actor eradicated the need for a final girl
  • The warm, retro feel of the film, which was provided in context and not forced as a gimmick
  • The fact that viewers had a chance to get invested in the characters before the killing started; regardless of whether we loved them all, the relationships were solid
  • A freak ass bonus monster whose first appearance is not exactly a jump scare but a “WHAT just happened?” kind of happy moment for horror enthusiasts
  • A pivotal appearance by a Hollywood icon (don’t IMDB or Google if you don’t know) who provides another “WHAT?” followed by happy horrified laughter from the crowd

I’ve already alerted the spoilers, so let’s wrap this up.

Remember, we knew very little about Freddy during the first Nightmare movie. The Bye Bye Man could take a cue from Craven’s masterpiece: Keep the killer in the shadows and torture the cast even more.

Walking away from this one, I hope it follows the path I envision for It Follows – multiple sequels—none ridiculous. With the right framework, Doug Jones could make the eponymous killer another Krueger. My next move will be to research the author of the original story, Robert Damon Schneck. Wikipedia says he’s an American author who specializes in “anomalous phenomena” … Cue The Muppets: Phenomenon. Seriously, I hear he’s creepy. Maybe I shouldn’t say it or think it.

If you thought the film was a lame remix of other stories, use that to fuel your own ideas. There’s a fine line between creative and crazy. Sometimes we need to use that line as a jump rope.

For now, Scream Freaks, this is bye bye.”

SCREAMING AT LINNEA QUIGLEY!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Hope your Halloween season’s off to a great start, and we can’t wait for you to join us for our epic Halloween finale next week, 10/20/16! Fun reviews, favorite characters return, and we reveal our plans for next season’s storyline that’s sure to get a lot of you falling out of your seat with excitement!

But focusing on the now, it’s time for another Tribute video and given we did a big one on Bruce “King of the B” Campbell last Halloween, we thought we’d turn to our favorite Queen of Scream this time, Linnea Quigley! Apocalyptic soldier, cemetery dancing punk, fitness instructor, nerd turned succubus, demonic cutie, chainsaw prancing hero, she’s played it all and continues to entertain us today with an ever growing list of credits. While most will always remember her for her iconic role as a naked zombie in Return of the Living Dead, our favorite Linnea role is still Spider from Sorority Babes at the Slime Bowl-O-Rama. She didn’t show any skin in that flick, but we always felt that was her coolest character who was tough, fun, and endearing. Anyway, check the video we put together below and bask in her talents!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! Seasons 1-2 after watching the latest Season 3 episodes, check out this week’s Howl’n Hottie, read recent reviews for the newer horror films we’re watching in our R-Rated Reviews blog, and help us get the word out about the web’s #1 animated horror host show! SCREAMING AT MADWORLD AND HALLOWEEN SHOUT OUTS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Wow, this has been one exciting week as our show picks up steam, and the best holiday of the year rolls into its first full week. Our fan base is growing, we’re talking to some important people, and there’s about to be plenty of irons in the fire!

First off, we have to give a shout out to Madworld Haunted Attraction located in Piedmont, SC. We were invited to their early bird special recently and got an exclusive behind the scenes tour of their operation which did not fail to impress! Their place is built like a miniature theme park, first herding you through a haunted hotel and then spitting you out on a haunted trail that’s a half mile of asylums, swamps, farms, sewers, gas stations, and specialty rooms overrun by all manner of freaks and weirdos! And once it’s all over, you can hang in the picnic area near a bonfire watching videos projected above the snack shack like an old drive-in or to try your luck in one of their escape rooms fashioned after prisons and Egyptian tombs. Lots of fun, worth the deniro, and be sure to take a friend as a human shield!

We also want to give a special thank you to our friends at Bloodbath & Beyond who produced a special video this week spotlighting YouTube horror reviewers who they believe deserve more eyes. Lots of talent were mentioned, some familiar, some new, and we were very touched to be included with such fine folk in the horror community. We’re definitely checking out all the new channels this Halloween and thankful for the boost in our subscriptions.

Finally, we’ll hopefully have a new Tribute vid ready to go by 10/10/16 which will celebrate a popular Scream Queen we’ve been longtime fans of, and may even release a mini-preview of the Season 3 finale that same day. We’ve also been talking with some rather important people about Screaming Soup! Season 4 which is going to be fucking epic as you’ll see revealed in the season finale, 10/20/16. I wish I could say more, but I don’t want to give anything away too soon.

Other than that, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT OCTOBER EVE AND MANDY’S BIRTHDAY!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Today is one bonanza indeed! Not only are we on the edge of diving into the official Halloween season, but today is also the birthday of our favorite ghostly gal, Mandy! If you didn’t know that already, it’s probably because she and Scooby-Doo share the same birthday, so one tends to eclipse the other. (happy birthday, scoob.)

Yessir, today’s gonna be full of wicked wines, candle meltin’ cakes, and all manner of horrific surprises as we shower Mandy with loads of ghastly gifts. We learned our lesson last year when we upset her with nothin’ but a heap of kitchen do-dads for whippin’ us up some chow and stuck with only the fun stuff this birthday. She’ll hopefully be happier receiving R. L. Stine books and slasher movies this time around!

In other news, we’re looking forward to a lot of our favorite TV shows coming back next week like Supernatural, been loving the new Comet Channel we came across which is reminiscent of the Sci-fi Channel’s early days, and counting down to our season finale 10/20/16 which will be a 40-45 min super show with a review of a fantastic trilogy everyone should see!

SCREAMING AT PINATA SURVIVAL ISLAND!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We see that silly rigor mortis grin spreading across your face and bet that’s because we got an all NEW Screaming Soup! episode for you today! Yessir, today we’re reviewing a horror film we only fell asleep 3 times during . . . Pinata Survival Island. Boozin’ college students, demonic piñatas, and the most lackluster romance to save the day!

In this review, we’re once again visited by the Grim Reaper from Your Final Answer (that guy’s really been hangin’ around) and have a very special cameo by Tiki Z from the indy published Tiki Zombie comics created by Michael Gordon. We’re incredibly grateful for Michael allowing us to animate Tiki Z who we became instant fans of after finding his comics at our local comic shop and insist you Scream Freaks hit him up for copies of his comics and Tiki Zombie soundtrack at tikizombie.net. You won’t regret it!

And real quick to follow up last week’s blog, Blair Witch sucked. It was well made, shot, and acted, but the story sucked because it’s more or less the first movie all over again just with more people, cameras, and effects. So, if you haven’t dropped any deniro for that walletbuster yet, DON’T! Still see it sometime, but wait for Netflix or Redbox. To see what else we thought about it, check out our review on the R-Rated Reviews page.

As a reminder, be sure to catch up on Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT THE BLAIR WITCH!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Simmer down now, we haven’t seen the new Blair Witch yet but plan on watching it tonight. Fangs crossed it doesn’t just recycle everything from the original. I can only hope we go beyond shaky cams and endless screaming in the woods to actually having witches and other demonic forces chargin’ the screen with a little bit of blood and gore given the budget and technology this series has at its disposal now.

Would you believe some of us didn’t even watch The Blair Witch Project until a handful of years ago! When the original came out, there were so many spoofs made about it from Scary Movie to Scooby-Doo commercials on Cartoon Network and porn parodies like the Bare Wench Project (with B-goddess Julie Strain we might add), several of us felt like we saw the movie already. And after finally sitting our tailbones down and viewing it from reel to reel, we were pretty much right! Still no shame in seeing Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows in the theaters years before checking out the original marketing moneymaker (but we are ashamed of being suckered by the Sci-fi Channel special that promoted the film as real found footage.).

Anyway, working hard on preparing Screaming Soup! Season 4 for 2017, excited about this upcoming episode 9/20/16 with a special cameo by Michael Gordon’s comic book creation, Tiki Zombie (tikizombie.net), still watching buttloads of ’80s slasher movies on YouTube, and picking up some more comics this week which should pop up on our Sequential Slime blog later next week. So, lots going on, gotta go, and see you next week for the all new episode where we review Pinata Survival Island!

SCREAMING AT MORE YOUTUBE MARATHONS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We almost missed this week’s update , because we’re still glued to the TV watching YouTube video after YouTube video of ’80s slasher flicks digital bootleggers put up. Two-headed show ponies, we never knew there was so much, and we keep finding more!

Hopefully you’re still keeping up with our R-Rated Reviews and see what we’re watching. Some films are eeeehhh, but others are stomach dropping, hair raising, shots of Wa-Pow! to the kisser! We find it funny how we find so many bad movies from the ’80s more tolerable than a lot of the cheaply filmed shit that comes out today. Probably because back then, if you wanted to make a movie, you had to actually work at it! Folks during the ’80s didn’t have cameras on every digital device, allowing dimwits to cobble together shaky cam bullshit with no regard for the art behind filmmaking. No, sir. Making a movie used to be more of a life changing operation, and only the truly committed saw it through. Wrestling with lights, renting filming equipment, investing in expensive footage to film on and then develop . . . there used to be way more care and thought before today’s simple point and shoot mentality. And when you invest that much time, money, and effort into a production, you damn well saw it through as best you could.

Enough of that soapbox jabber! We’re gettin’ back to reviewing/watching more bottom of the barrel entertainment, but look below for YouTube links to some of the better films we’ve seen recently.

SCREAMING AT ’80s SLASHERS ON YOUTUBE!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s been a busy busy week, I tell you what! Now, there’s plenty of you horror hounds out there tweeting requests for us to give ya our 2 cents on everything from your favorite B-movies to cartoons and video games, and we’re more than happy to oblige! Problem is, however, animation is a long and tedious process that limits how many of these requests we can get to with a full blown animated adventure. Our compromise? The R-Rated Review blog!

Here, we update you every week on what we’ve been watching from bootleg DVDs of forgotten horrors from yesteryear to the Imax blockbusters of today. We can’t give ya a full blown course of an animated review for everything we see, but we can easily feed ya some snack size opinions that clearly give ya our quick and dirty rundown of a film’s worth.

Another problem with review requests is whether or not we have the movies you want us to watch and shoot the shit about. We’ve got a huge collection of horror we’re adding to every month, but our wish list of movies is pretty long before we can turn to hunting down and purchasing what you want us to see. But then there’s the Scream Freaks we love who make things easy by either mailing their requested movies to us for review or send us links to videos online.

Thanks to these loyal Scream Freaks, we’ve been made aware of some more obscure slasher films we’ve never seen from the ’80s, and those fans even provided us with Youtube links to watch them all! Sure some of them are poor bootleg quality, but they’re all watchable and free until some higher force takes them down. Honoring the fans, we’ve pretty much been shut ins the last couple of weeks watching these B-movies one after another, constantly adding to the R-Rated Review blog. Because those Scream Freaks were nice enough to share this nostalgic entertainment with us, we want to share it with you. Check out the links below, and see what we think about them in our blog after watching them or use our reviews to help choose some horrific entertainment!

SCREAMING AT JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN’S DAUGHTER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Start poppin’ that popcorn and pour some alcohol in your soda as we kick back for another exciting episode of Screaming Soup! Buzzkill’s still got the Howl-Inn Grub & Spirits under his thumb and help is still being recruited for taking him and his monster misfits out. This time the road to victory leads us to legends in both western and horror with the oddball combo of Jesse James and Maria Frankenstein!

These nuts first met in Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter which obviously becomes our flick to review this episode. It’s a different kind of film with its genre mish-mashing that’s a hit and miss from scene to scene, but had enough going on in it for us to have some fun stuff to shoot the shit about. Hopefully without too much trouble from the voodoo hoodoo gang that runs the restaurant we’re meeting them at!

And a special thanks to the Grim Reaper from Your Final Answer for putting up with Buzzkill as a guest star. Check out the Reaper’s website (paradeofhorrorables.com), and subscribe to his Youtube page!!
