Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Hope you’re doin’ well and beatin’ this summer heat with some well-deserved downtime watchin’ scary flicks at your local air-conditioned theater. That’s what we’ve been doin’ after all! In fact, we just got back from watchin’ a 5/5 treat we didn’t expect to like so much, Ready or Not.
When we first saw this flick advertised, we didn’t give it a whole lot of thought. It looked like a bland period piece and felt a little hackneyed with that tired ol’ Most Dangerous Game plot with folks huntin’ other folks for sport. But then a trailer was released showin’ characters in cars and on their cell phones which clued us in this is a modern story, and we caught wind Stephen King was singin’ its praises. So, our rowdy gang of misfits headed for the big-screen for what would turn out to be the best weddin’ horror flick we’ve ever seen!
The plot’s as follows. Grace marries Alex, the estranged son of board game barons, at his family’s estate, but as soon as they say, “I do,” she’s hurried into a weddin’ tradition where new members of the family are initiated by playin’ somethin’ like game roulette. The family reveals through some convoluted backstory how they came into their fortune thanks to a satanic box or somethin’ an ancestor won in a gamble forever ago, and some deal with the devil was struck. In return for their fortune (and their lives), new spouses have to play a randomly selected game on their weddin’ night. Some joke ’bout havin’ played checkers or Old Maid for their initiations, but Grace unfortunately ends up with hide-and-seek which turns out to be devil code for sacrifice. Grace eventually gets a clue she’s in actual danger durin’ the game and spends the rest of the movie fleein’ her satanist in-laws who believe they need to kill her to avoid their own death by mornin’.
Full of fun tension, Ready or Not hits on all pistons with escalatin’ dangers, solid characters, dark humor, thoughtful cinematography, and went above and beyond any expectations we had for it. It’s still the tired ol’ Most Dangerous Game plot essentially, yeah, but the satanist detail really adds somethin’ special with the whole movie keepin’ us on the edge of our seat regardin’ Grace’s fate while wonderin’ if the demonic dealin’s are real or a bunch of hookum. You know it’s a great movie when any endin’ you imagine happenin’ feels equally satisfyin’. The only thin’ sweeter is Grace bein’ played by Samara Weaving, who honestly should’ve been ‘nough reason for us to run our asses to the theater to begin with.
Samara Weaving first made our radar with her head-turnin’ performance as the killer bombshell in Netflix’s The Babysitter then caught our attention again when she played a memorable deadite casualty in the first season of Ash vs Evil Dead (which someone wrongfully used her gory behind the scene photos as fake evidence of violence at President Trump rallies to stir online controversy). Followin’ those notable acts with a kick-ass performance as a rage fueled woman out for blood in Mayhem, we knew she was securin’ a foothold in the horror genre as its next superstar. After seein’ her stretch her actin’ range to include a final girl who can compete with Carrie White in a horrific fashion show by the end of Ready or Not, it’s clear she’s destined for hall of famer status. Killer, victim, fighter, last girl . . . is there any horror role this gal can’t tackle?!
So, to wrap this love letter up, go seek Ready or Not! It’s a perfect date night movie, there’s plenty of dark humor without it feelin’ stupid for a gang of friends to laugh at, and Samara Weaving is well worth the ticket price alone!!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We’ve been proponents of comics for as long as we can remember and are thrilled the rest of the world has finally caught up with givin’ them the recognition they deserve as a respectable outlet of literature. Course this has backfired somewhat, ’cause the same pretentious folks who were snobs about the artistic merit of comics are now oversaturatin’ comics’ fan base as born again funny book supporters, which kind of robs comics of their attraction a little, you know? It’s like havin’ a favorite cult film. It’s a cult film because only a few sickos with warped minds find any joy in watchin’ and celebratin’ entertainment the mainstream audience deems trash. But overtime, these trashy flicks gain traction thanks to video releases, cable broadcasts, and websites, and suddenly your outsider quirks for wearin’ Evil Dead 2 t-shirts or havin’ Big Trouble in Little China up poster on your wall don’t seem all that special anymore. But don’t get us wrong. Popularity in the mainstream means companies and studios will happily pump out more stories of our favorite monsters and psycho slashers for a buck, and the fast track for meetin’ these demands are typically comics.
Over the years, we have made it our business to hunt down the complete run of comics related to our favorite series of horror flicks. You name it, we more than likely have it. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child’s Play, Fright Night, and even the coveted and super rare copy of Phantasm: Overminds, the first and last time we pay more than $20 for a single funny book. The only exception we make for collectin’ these are the direct comic adaptations of movies themselves. They can give ya insight for how a movie might have played out if there was no such thing as a budget, but why do I want a comic when I already have the movie, you know?
This is a tradition that continues today with more companies than ever willin’ to license old movies for rag picture books, and we keep track of our favorite titles issue for issue at our Sequential Slime blog. For fun, we thought we’d clue you in to what’s recently come out and sum up our thoughts on them.
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA
Based on one of Carpenter’s zaniest flicks, this is an impressive series that’s yet to produce a bad issue. Jack Burton continues his Asian themed adventures with most the original characters from Big Trouble in Little China which includes a resurrected Lo Pan as the regular baddie out for revenge. With Carpenter guidin’ the stories, the series is full of humor, action, character, and charm as Jack drives his truck to hell and back fightin’ supernatural spooks, booger beasts, apocalyptic demons, and even Snake Plissken!
HATCHET
Putrid polecats! Adam Green’s retro lovin’ gore trilogy ’bout a swamp slasher literally tearin’ folks apart makes for great popcorn flicks, but its first swing at bein’ a comic leaves a lot to be desired. The story is so-so ’bout college filmmakers makin’ a horror movie at Victor Crowley’s ol’ stompin’ ground, but the art is damn near detestable with it lookin’ rushed and half assed by the second issue. We’d only recommend this series to the die-hard fans.
ASH VS THE ARMY OF DARKNESS
Runnin’ strong after more than a decade in a consistently published comic series, we have a love/hate relationship with Dynamite’s stories of Ash’s continuin’ fight against the Deadites. More often than not, the series has been cannibalizin’ Sam Raimi’s movies from its plots to its one liners, resultin’ in an inbred product that rarely dares to take Ash and the series in new directions. The latest five issue mini, Ash vs The Army of Darkness, ain’t all bad with some new lore and villains added to the series as Ash goes undercover at a school infested with Deadites, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. As a side note, avoid the latest AOD/Xena crossover “Forever . . . And A Day” like a boonies proctologist with used tongs. Worst AOD story EVER published to paper!
THE HOWLING
A truer sequel to the original Joe Dante flick than Howling II: . . . Your Sister’s A Werewolf, these comics pick up after Dee Wallace is put down on live television and follows Marsha Quist as the movie’s lone survivin’ werewolf on a killin’ spree for magic that will give her control over a bunch of zombie werewolves. This is a very so-so series. It’s well made, but we think the artist needs to up the gore, and the writer should mesh Marsha’s story more with Chris’s (Dee’s coworker who shoots her on TV and is on the run from the government wantin’ to shut him up ’bout the existence of werewolves).
PUPPET MASTER
This is the best movie tie in comic on the rack today, Scream Freaks! Comin’ to the end of its licensin’ contract, Action Labs is wrappin’ up an amazin’ run of stories that not only bring back Full Moon Empire’s killer splinters but manages to cleverly cover up a lot of the movies’ plotholes. Brilliantly written, full of gory action, and thankfully brings the puppets back to modern times for more adventures that include some of our favorite characters from the first six flicks. We cannot recommend this one enough before its gone!

This week we’re enjoyin’ her glam warrior outfit from Howling II which is a hoot of a commonly bashed flick with her playin’ a orgy lovin’ werewolf employin’ midget henchmen to stop Christopher Lee from killin’ her. Most remembered for her topless shirt rippin’ scene that’s replayed 17 times in the movie! Be sure to check more out the next couple of weeks, and let us know what your favorite Sybil flick is.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! With our current flings into streaming television broadcasts thanks to The Vortexx and Beta Max TV, we realized y’all might be interested in hearin’ our two cents on somethin’ we never talk about, and that’s TV! We talk and bitch about movies all day, but what TV shows grab the attention of your favorite team of animated horror hosts? What programs have the power to possess us to return to the boob tube each week in anticipation of a good time? Well, we’ll tell ya.
Focusin’ on newer shows that are currently runnin’, we watch our fair share of super dupers and comedies, but there’s lots of horror themed shows out there we regularly tune into.
One show we’ve watched since the beginnin’ is American Horror Story. Thought the first season with the haunted house was neat. Could care less about the asylum in season 2 because it felt like everything and the kitchen sink was thrown into the story without a satisfying wrap-up. Loved season 3 with the witches, and season 4’s freaks offered a lot of wonderfully disturbin’ stories we highly relished. The hotel in season 5 was an awesome settin’ but the story kind of got a little scattered at times. And finally, this past season with the reality show/documentary theme was a little bit of a miss for us, but only because we felt there were more lackluster episodes than usual in this season. Lookin’ forward to the next season that’s rumored to merge stories from past seasons.
It took us ’til season 2 to get on the band wagon, but we are regular viewers of The Walking Dead, and usually watch Talking Dead right after. It’s amazin’ how far this show has come along with its gore and characters and even more amazin’ how hooked we still are as the show switches gears more than ever with zombie apocalypse survivors goin’ to war with each other more than with the zombies. As long as Rick ain’t killed, we’re good with whoever they add to the body count. Mandy’s gettin’ real upset about the addition of the tiger though . . .
We did check out that Dead of Summer show on Freeform, about teen counselors encounterin’ supernatural prophecies at their summer camp. It was pretty good. Some cool deaths, Tony Todd plays a ghost, and it has a scary enough story about demons, slashers, and cults with some ’80s nostalgia to sweeten the show, but we weren’t completely sold on the cast of teens and some of the surprise twists got confusin’ plot wise.
Mandy’s always declarin’ MTV’s Teen Wolf is the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Funny thing is, though, it’s the sidekick, Stiles, we’ve become the biggest fans of, and he’s got zero monster powers! Fun and full of monsters, the only problem we ever had with this show is it always seems to be tryin’ to tell more than one crazy story at a time, makin’ it easy to get lost in some pretty complex plots and lose track of characters comin’ and goin’ for reasons we entirely forget. Sad to see it leave the airwaves this year.
Lastly, the one show we can’t get enough of, which is a testament to the show’s writers and cast, is Supernatural. Holy shit, 12 seasons and running, Sam and Dean Winchester haven’t lost a beat as two brothers beating almost every horror imaginable from small town vampires to world threatening gods and even Death himself! Skeptical viewers didn’t think the show could keep raisin’ the bar after the boys from Kansas defeated the devil by Season 5, but the show did just that and never lost our interests or loyalty as viewers. Sam and Dean have been so developed by this point, we would happily watch a whole episode if it were nothin’ but them drivin’ around shootin’ the shit. That’s a powerful show for that reason alone, and really deserves a lot more cinematic recognition for all it’s achieved over the years.
Syfy’s Face-Off is a favorite among us here as well. The format gets a little old at times, but that doesn’t rob those awesome moments when special effect wizards show what they got and make us gasp or cringe. It’s especially fun to talk with the contestants through Twitter after a show.
And we’re absolutely watchin’ Ash vs Evil Dead! This was the best decision to bring Ash back with a TV show instead of a movie, because it truly keeps the gravy train goin’ for us Bruce Campbell fans with long-term adventures produced year round. We think season 1 moved a little slowly with the show findin its pace and character, rehashin’ some of the same ol’ same ol’, but season 2 has proven to be everythin we hoped the show could be, and we’re lovin’ it!
We don’t want this entry to run too long, so that’s pretty much it! Now, you know what we’re watchin’! This time ’round, we’re reviewing a double feature of 2 nature gone bad flicks from the ’70s, Frogs (starring Sam “Dodge Ram” Elliot) and Squirm. We can’t remember what exactly motivated us to review these 2 lackluster films to begin with, but each certainly offers up its own form of B-grade entertainment for us to riff on. Or should we say for Billy and Tequila Worm to riff on! That’s right, these 2 Screaming Soup! alum get their 15 seconds of fame as guest hosts filling in, and we think they did a pretty awesome job at it! Today is the dawn of an all new season, and we’re kicking it off with one of the most disappointing finds we’ve ever had the misfortune of stumbling across, Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars! Putrid polecats, this is one stinker that’s really overlooked when horror fans debate the worst of the worst out there, and we’re happy to bring it to everyone’s attention as something that’s so bad it’s awful! We’re still at a loss why a national hero like Drive-In critic Joe Bob Briggs gave it such high praise with 3/4 stars, but maybe he can tell us one day.
You’ll also notice we got ourselves a story arc happening now with your favorite animated horror host finding himself without his favorite table, and it’s gonna take all season for him to fight for it back from Buzzkill and his monster misfits you may recognize from Robot Monster, It! Conquered the World, and From Hell it Came. As the season progresses, you’ll be shown new corners of the Howl-Inn Grub and Spirits, and even get to see what’s out in the interdimensional Crosslands as the stakes get higher and Deadwest‘s troubles get worse. It’s going to be a blast of a year, and it all starts with Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars below!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Christmas is still a little ways off, but we want to give you fans an early gift this holiday season. We previously mentioned we were working on a very special artist spotlight for the Graphic Headstone blog, and that interview is now complete and approved by the artist himself for public consumption. For our final Graphic Headstone entry for 2015, we proudly present the original artist of the Evil Dead series since ground zero, Tom Sullivan!
For those who don’t know, Tom was the creative whirlwind behind the art, special effects, and stop-motion animation of the original Evil Dead film, and its short film predecessor, Within the Woods. He continued working on effects in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and has had varying levels of involvement with later incarnations of the Evil Dead series.
We first met Tom years ago when he caught us selling self-made copies of his Necronomicon book from Evil Dead 2 online. Amazed one of Evil Dead’s most legendary names was contacting us directly, we of course complied with his demands to cease and desist further infringement on his copyrighted work immediately. Flattered by our respect for his wishes and impeccable duplication of his book, Tom asked to do a trade. For a copy of our Necronomicon knock-off, he mailed us a packet slammed with art prints and copies of his short lived comic, Tom Sullivan’s Books of the Dead: Devilhead, and even invited us to meet him at an upcoming horror convention. Without hesitation, we drove like crazed fan boys and met this living legend in person. Tom is a very nice and easy guy to speak with. He showed us his collection of fan-made Necronomicons he showcases at conventions (ours included), let us hold and look through the ORIGINAL Necronomicon from the first film, and introduced us to all the filmmakers at the convention including Roy Frumkes who gave us a free signed DVD of Street Trash. It was a very memorable experience and is what helped jumpstart our career paths in horror entertainment.

This has been one crazy month with our first attempt at publishing daily videos and blogs to celebrate the premier of Bruce Campbell’s “Ash VS Evil Dead” on Starz Halloween night, but we feel it was worth it. Some dedicated Bruce Campbell fans got to enjoy the highlights of his career everyday this month, we made some people laugh, and even got a positive tweet from the King himself saying, “Let’s do this,” when tagging him in our promo for dedicating this Halloween to the King of B. Then there’s the daily pumpkin spice blog, this year’s Halloween Eeeh!-Card, the season 2 finale with the Ghouligans, etc., etc.
But now Halloween is here, and we’re just chilling. Sure, we’re still wrapping up production for Screaming Soup! Season 3 (premiering 1/20/16), drawing up more promotional art, editing together special advertising vids, and prepping for Season 4 but we think we can take a breather for the holiday. Yup, we’re just going to attend our favorite annual haunt this time of year, pop open a cold one and watch the Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors marathon on FXX while digging into bowls of candy and plates of bat wings and witch fingers.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks and Happy Early Halloween w/ our season 2 finale! It’s been an amazing season this year, and we’re wrapping it up with a half hour Mega review of the classic Slumber Party Massacre series from Roger Corman! Mecha-bull riding, bobbing for grenades, hottie contest, pumpkin carving . . . we blow this party out like none other!
Everyone from seasons past are invited and even some new lovely faces make an appearance, but we’re most stoked about the special guests of the night, the Ghouligans! Despite their recent retirement from the horror entertainment business after 10 years, they were cool enough to dust off the fangs and capes to humble us with a cameo that’s like no other Ghouligans performance seen before (because its animated, duh). We’re happy to have connected with this stellar group and hope to work together again in the near future. Despite them closing up shop, you can still dig up their work for some howling entertainment at their website and/or Youtube channel!
Now, just because we won’t be back with more Screaming Soup! episodes until Jan’16, doesn’t mean this site will be abandoned till then. We’ll actually be spending the off season adding more cool interviews with hot artists to our Graphic Headstone blog and giving you more updates on what to expect in the upcoming season 3!

Wow! Halloween is almost here and there’s so much going on it’s nuts! We’re also continuing our 31 days of Pumpkin Spice hell with “Mandy’s I Can’t Believe They Have Pumpkin,” and drew up an all NEW Screaming Soup! Halloween Eeeh-Card! for this year!
Lot to take in, right? But there’s more! For those who didn’t read the blog last week, we’re having some special guests briefly bounce back from retirement to make a cameo in the Season 2 finale of Screaming Soup!, the Ghouligans! These guys have been rocking and howling the west coast for the last 10 years (Click HERE for their Youtube channel), but sadly hung up their capes and fangs just a few months ago. Luckily, the magic of animation can’t be denied and they were more than happy to attend our Halloween blowout! Howdy there, Scream Freaks! October been fun for ya yet? Seen Eli Roth’s Green Inferno or picked up the new Trick ‘r Treat comic? Or more importantly, have you been enjoying our chuckle inducing “Bruce Campbell VS” videos? Better be, because with the excitement building for the premier of the all new Ash VS Evil Dead on the Starz network Halloween night, we’re continuing our celebration of the king of B everyday this month!
When you stop to think about it, what does it take to be the king of B movies? Most of us have this narrow perception of Bruce Campbell’s cult status based solely on his involvement in the Evil Dead franchise, with respectable nods to his others works like Xena: Warrior Princess, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., and Bubba Ho-Tep. but these are just 4 roles he’s played out of 100+ credits!
Bruce was fortunate enough to play more than one memorable character that immortalizes him in comics, action figures, video games, art, and fan favorite countdowns till the end of days, but its the entirety of his diverse work that truly earns him the credit as the king of the B movies. For the last 30 years, he’s played a baby snatching demon, been killed by cyborgs on the moon, fought Napoleon as a 19th century superhero, liberated slaves from alien oppression, battled Angus Scrimm into a meat grinder, raced Herbie the Lovebug to a photo finish . . . the list goes on and on! With Bruce returning to the role that first made him a star, we took it upon ourselves to celebrate his amazing career in movies with this edition of Screaming Tribute!
The video below contains at least one clip from nearly every piece of cinematic work Bruce has performed in. You’ll see shots from his humble Super-8 beginnings all the way to the blockbusters he stars in today. We even included clips from the cartoons and video games he’s humorously voiced as well as commercials he hammed up. We only left out his Coen brother appearances where he was barley seen in the backgrounds, voice over work that didn’t have enough (if any) of his appearance, and only a handful of obscure movies and TV shows that most aren’t even aware of.

The plot’s as follows. Grace marries Alex, the estranged son of board game barons, at his family’s estate, but as soon as they say, “I do,” she’s hurried into a weddin’ tradition where new members of the family are initiated by playin’ somethin’ like game roulette. The family reveals through some convoluted backstory how they came into their fortune thanks to a satanic box or somethin’ an ancestor won in a gamble forever ago, and some deal with the devil was struck. In return for their fortune (and their lives), new spouses have to play a randomly selected game on their weddin’ night. Some joke ’bout havin’ played checkers or Old Maid for their initiations, but Grace unfortunately ends up with hide-and-seek which turns out to be devil code for sacrifice. Grace eventually gets a clue she’s in actual danger durin’ the game and spends the rest of the movie fleein’ her satanist in-laws who believe they need to kill her to avoid their own death by mornin’.
Samara Weaving first made our radar with her head-turnin’ performance as the killer bombshell in Netflix’s The Babysitter then caught our attention again when she played a memorable deadite casualty in the first season of Ash vs Evil Dead (which someone wrongfully used her gory behind the scene photos as fake evidence of violence at President Trump rallies to stir online controversy). Followin’ those notable acts with a kick-ass performance as a rage fueled woman out for blood in Mayhem, we knew she was securin’ a foothold in the horror genre as its next superstar. After seein’ her stretch her actin’ range to include a final girl who can compete with Carrie White in a horrific fashion show by the end of Ready or Not, it’s clear she’s destined for hall of famer status. Killer, victim, fighter, last girl . . . is there any horror role this gal can’t tackle?!
