Howdy there, Scream Freaks, and Happy Valentine’s from all of us here at your favorite waterin’ hole for animated horror hostin’! While normal folks packed out fancy restaurants and fell out in diabetic comas from an overdose of sweet gestures, we spent our romantic evenin’ over bags of popcorn and smuggled red champagne in a dark movie theater. Yup, with our seats reclined all the way back in the last cineplex without assigned seatin’ in our parts, we enjoyed each other’s company and our own private screenin’ of Happy Death Day 2U!
If ya been keepin’ up with our R-Rated Review Blog these past few years, then you know we love the first Happy Death Day which is basically the horror version of Groundhog Day with a time limit for how many times a sorority bitch turned loveable last girl Tree can reboot her day before solvin’ her own murder. In Happy Death Day 2U, Tree learns a student’s science project is to blame for her temporal problems, and the doo-hickey throws her back into the same repeatin’ day all over again, but the twist this time is it’s now happenin’ in an alternate dimension with a different killer and outcomes. For an unprecedented sequel to a typical one and done kind of movie, this is just as fun to watch as the original, but is apples to oranges in comparison.
Understandably the filmmakers are ridin’ a fine line to keep such a familiar story fresh given the repetitive theme and end up steerin’ Happy Death Day 2U away from horror and closer to a sci-fi comedy. We’ve got no problem with that, of course, and are reminded of the twist and turns movies like the Evil Dead trilogy took from its hardcore horror beginnin’s to the fantasy adventure Army of Darkness endin’ up bein’. In fact, the characters even reference their situation to Back to the Future 2 which explains this Robert Zemeckis kind-of tonal shift, and echoes of Back to the Future’s theme in Happy Death Day 2U’s score.
The biggest reason why this ain’t as much of a horror as the first movie, however, is mainly ‘cause Tree’s not even the baby face killer’s target in this thing which robs the movie of that whole who-dunnit mystery thrill that was so engagin’ before. And what little murder mystery is revealed by the end is so bafflin’, we were shoutin’ in the theater for the filmmakers to take their asses back to the drawin’ board! So, without Tree needin’ to fight to stay alive, she spends the majority of the flick figurin’ out ways to close the time loop and stressin’ over which dimension she prefers to stay in which offers its own kind of tension, but not as much as someone avoidin’ an inevitable death sentence.
And without the killer sendin’ her back in time with every murder, it’s up to Tree to reset her own days with a music video montage of laughable suicides which raises its own questions. With every fatal reset, Tree’s body undergoes a form of trauma that diminishes her chances for respawnin’. She had no choice but to accept this toll on her life force when the killer was always catchin’ her in the first movie, but now that she’s not a predestined victim, why doesn’t she simply ride the day out instead of puttin’ herself at risk with all these needless suicides? We get she’s impatient to end the never endin’ day and laugh at every outrageous expiration she comes up with, but it just doesn’t make any sense when you think it through.
Despite these couple of forgivable sours, this is still a sweet follow-up to the first Happy Death Day we highly recommend fans of the first one see. It ain’t as scary or thrillin’, but it makes up for it with laughs and suspense with a amazin’ tour de France performance by Jessica Rothe as Tree that made us fall in love with her for the first time again.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! As you would have guessed it, things have been busy ’round our parts, and we’re hurryin’ as fast as we can to bring you the next excitin’ episode of Screaming Soup! Until then, there’s been plenty goin’ on behind the scenes we can’t wait to share with ya!
For starters, we can officially say we got one of the alternate covers for Full Moon Comix’ Dollman Kills the Full Moon Universe #3 due out ’round October! Yeehaw, that achievement feels real good, if we say so ourselves, and we can’t wait for y’all to see it along with the rest our work we did for them! For those of y’all keepin’ track, we got a page of art in the first and second issue, and now we’re one of the cover options for the third issue. So, if Dollman blowin’ up all your favorite Full Moon characters wasn’t enough incentive to buy the series already, now you know you’ll also be collectin’ artwork in these historic issues by us here at Screaming Soup!
All this excitement has definitely lit a fire under our asses to make more headway with our plans for a Screaming Soup! comic we mentioned a while back. It’s currently planned to be a four issue mini-series and will be a prequel that shares a few of our adventures in the Crosslands before settlin’ down at the Howl-Inn Grub and Spirits. We already have the plots figured out and started draftin’ page layouts which we just finished for the first issue. This goes against normal practice somewhat, but we’re gonna complete all four issues before hittin’ up potential publishers we have in mind for printin’ this series. We’re gonna make sure every issue is packed with humor, action, monsters, and content not already found in the show.
And while we’re on the topic of horror comics, be sure to swing by our latest reviews of what we’re readin’ on our Sequential Slime blog. There’s a lot of good horror movie tie-in comics hittin’ the racks right now, and we give ya our two cents on most of them issue by issue. We bitch ’bout the Army of Darkness/KISS crossover rehashin’ Raimi’s third Evil Dead flick for the umpteenth time, praise the latest Big Trouble in Little China mini-series, ride the fence on the brand spankin’ new books on Pumpkinhead and Jeepers Creepers, and fall into abysmal disappointment over Robocop’s latest storyline. Despite great artwork, it always comes down to story determinin’ how well these comics are received or not.
Before we forget, let us mention to ya we think the El Rey Network may have finally watched our Screaming Soup! submission for their animated edition of the People’s Network. We haven’t been officially notified or anythin’ yet, but we saw the YouTube views on that private video jumped a little which is GREAT, ’cause that means someone watched it at least three times. Fangs crossed that means one judge watched it and liked it enough to promote it ’round the office over there or somethin’. And if that weren’t enough excitement to keep us on the edge of our bar stool, we were remindin’ folks in a tweet ’bout our excitement over the return of legendary horror host Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder, and a fan replied with interest in seein’ the two of us in some kind of crossover. We fired back we have a script written for such a horrific ocassion, and Joe Bob directly hit us up wantin’ to read it! Toxic taco toadies, can you imagine the sonic boom thunderin’ ‘cross the lands from our heads explodin’ if somethin’ so surreal were to happen as Joe Bob Briggs doin’ a crossover with our show?!! Breath . . .

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We’ve been proponents of comics for as long as we can remember and are thrilled the rest of the world has finally caught up with givin’ them the recognition they deserve as a respectable outlet of literature. Course this has backfired somewhat, ’cause the same pretentious folks who were snobs about the artistic merit of comics are now oversaturatin’ comics’ fan base as born again funny book supporters, which kind of robs comics of their attraction a little, you know? It’s like havin’ a favorite cult film. It’s a cult film because only a few sickos with warped minds find any joy in watchin’ and celebratin’ entertainment the mainstream audience deems trash. But overtime, these trashy flicks gain traction thanks to video releases, cable broadcasts, and websites, and suddenly your outsider quirks for wearin’ Evil Dead 2 t-shirts or havin’ Big Trouble in Little China up poster on your wall don’t seem all that special anymore. But don’t get us wrong. Popularity in the mainstream means companies and studios will happily pump out more stories of our favorite monsters and psycho slashers for a buck, and the fast track for meetin’ these demands are typically comics.
Over the years, we have made it our business to hunt down the complete run of comics related to our favorite series of horror flicks. You name it, we more than likely have it. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Child’s Play, Fright Night, and even the coveted and super rare copy of Phantasm: Overminds, the first and last time we pay more than $20 for a single funny book. The only exception we make for collectin’ these are the direct comic adaptations of movies themselves. They can give ya insight for how a movie might have played out if there was no such thing as a budget, but why do I want a comic when I already have the movie, you know?
This is a tradition that continues today with more companies than ever willin’ to license old movies for rag picture books, and we keep track of our favorite titles issue for issue at our Sequential Slime blog. For fun, we thought we’d clue you in to what’s recently come out and sum up our thoughts on them.
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA
Based on one of Carpenter’s zaniest flicks, this is an impressive series that’s yet to produce a bad issue. Jack Burton continues his Asian themed adventures with most the original characters from Big Trouble in Little China which includes a resurrected Lo Pan as the regular baddie out for revenge. With Carpenter guidin’ the stories, the series is full of humor, action, character, and charm as Jack drives his truck to hell and back fightin’ supernatural spooks, booger beasts, apocalyptic demons, and even Snake Plissken!
HATCHET
Putrid polecats! Adam Green’s retro lovin’ gore trilogy ’bout a swamp slasher literally tearin’ folks apart makes for great popcorn flicks, but its first swing at bein’ a comic leaves a lot to be desired. The story is so-so ’bout college filmmakers makin’ a horror movie at Victor Crowley’s ol’ stompin’ ground, but the art is damn near detestable with it lookin’ rushed and half assed by the second issue. We’d only recommend this series to the die-hard fans.
ASH VS THE ARMY OF DARKNESS
Runnin’ strong after more than a decade in a consistently published comic series, we have a love/hate relationship with Dynamite’s stories of Ash’s continuin’ fight against the Deadites. More often than not, the series has been cannibalizin’ Sam Raimi’s movies from its plots to its one liners, resultin’ in an inbred product that rarely dares to take Ash and the series in new directions. The latest five issue mini, Ash vs The Army of Darkness, ain’t all bad with some new lore and villains added to the series as Ash goes undercover at a school infested with Deadites, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. As a side note, avoid the latest AOD/Xena crossover “Forever . . . And A Day” like a boonies proctologist with used tongs. Worst AOD story EVER published to paper!
THE HOWLING
A truer sequel to the original Joe Dante flick than Howling II: . . . Your Sister’s A Werewolf, these comics pick up after Dee Wallace is put down on live television and follows Marsha Quist as the movie’s lone survivin’ werewolf on a killin’ spree for magic that will give her control over a bunch of zombie werewolves. This is a very so-so series. It’s well made, but we think the artist needs to up the gore, and the writer should mesh Marsha’s story more with Chris’s (Dee’s coworker who shoots her on TV and is on the run from the government wantin’ to shut him up ’bout the existence of werewolves).
PUPPET MASTER
This is the best movie tie in comic on the rack today, Scream Freaks! Comin’ to the end of its licensin’ contract, Action Labs is wrappin’ up an amazin’ run of stories that not only bring back Full Moon Empire’s killer splinters but manages to cleverly cover up a lot of the movies’ plotholes. Brilliantly written, full of gory action, and thankfully brings the puppets back to modern times for more adventures that include some of our favorite characters from the first six flicks. We cannot recommend this one enough before its gone!

This week we’re enjoyin’ her glam warrior outfit from Howling II which is a hoot of a commonly bashed flick with her playin’ a orgy lovin’ werewolf employin’ midget henchmen to stop Christopher Lee from killin’ her. Most remembered for her topless shirt rippin’ scene that’s replayed 17 times in the movie! Be sure to check more out the next couple of weeks, and let us know what your favorite Sybil flick is.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s Wednesday and that means fresh print just got dumped on the comic racks! If you follow our Sequential Slime blog, you’re already aware of what we’ve been reading and consider the best horror movie related funny books out there right now. We’re still on the fence with the Army of Darkness books, love the Puppet Master comics,and still can’t get over Kurt Russell’s curtain call from comics with the sudden cancelation of Escape From New York and the end of Big Trouble in Little China’s run! But we’re happier than coyotes in a henhouse about the announced crossover between Snake Plissken and Jack Burton!
Anyway, it’s time for another Graphic Violence review, and this time around we picked another lesser known run of licensed rag reads, focusing on the 6 issue mini-series of Little Monsters from NOW comics. Released on the heels of Beetlejuice, Little Monsters is a cult film that’s about a boy named Brian who captures and befriends a monster under his bed named Maurice who introduces Brian to a fantasy world of monsters and magic under the beds of the world. It’s hard to believe this beloved 80s flick isn’t bigger than it is being when it’s so ripe for translating into a successful kids cartoon, but it was simply overlooked for one reason or another.
Lucky for the fans, however, there was one attempt at continuing the adventures of Brian and Maurice, and that was the handful of comics published by NOW comics a few short months after the film’s release in theaters. These comics are alright for the most part, but you’ll need to watch the vid below to get the full run down on what all we liked and despised about them.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Christmas is still a little ways off, but we want to give you fans an early gift this holiday season. We previously mentioned we were working on a very special artist spotlight for the Graphic Headstone blog, and that interview is now complete and approved by the artist himself for public consumption. For our final Graphic Headstone entry for 2015, we proudly present the original artist of the Evil Dead series since ground zero, Tom Sullivan!
For those who don’t know, Tom was the creative whirlwind behind the art, special effects, and stop-motion animation of the original Evil Dead film, and its short film predecessor, Within the Woods. He continued working on effects in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and has had varying levels of involvement with later incarnations of the Evil Dead series.
We first met Tom years ago when he caught us selling self-made copies of his Necronomicon book from Evil Dead 2 online. Amazed one of Evil Dead’s most legendary names was contacting us directly, we of course complied with his demands to cease and desist further infringement on his copyrighted work immediately. Flattered by our respect for his wishes and impeccable duplication of his book, Tom asked to do a trade. For a copy of our Necronomicon knock-off, he mailed us a packet slammed with art prints and copies of his short lived comic, Tom Sullivan’s Books of the Dead: Devilhead, and even invited us to meet him at an upcoming horror convention. Without hesitation, we drove like crazed fan boys and met this living legend in person. Tom is a very nice and easy guy to speak with. He showed us his collection of fan-made Necronomicons he showcases at conventions (ours included), let us hold and look through the ORIGINAL Necronomicon from the first film, and introduced us to all the filmmakers at the convention including Roy Frumkes who gave us a free signed DVD of Street Trash. It was a very memorable experience and is what helped jumpstart our career paths in horror entertainment.

This has been one crazy month with our first attempt at publishing daily videos and blogs to celebrate the premier of Bruce Campbell’s “Ash VS Evil Dead” on Starz Halloween night, but we feel it was worth it. Some dedicated Bruce Campbell fans got to enjoy the highlights of his career everyday this month, we made some people laugh, and even got a positive tweet from the King himself saying, “Let’s do this,” when tagging him in our promo for dedicating this Halloween to the King of B. Then there’s the daily pumpkin spice blog, this year’s Halloween Eeeh!-Card, the season 2 finale with the Ghouligans, etc., etc.
But now Halloween is here, and we’re just chilling. Sure, we’re still wrapping up production for Screaming Soup! Season 3 (premiering 1/20/16), drawing up more promotional art, editing together special advertising vids, and prepping for Season 4 but we think we can take a breather for the holiday. Yup, we’re just going to attend our favorite annual haunt this time of year, pop open a cold one and watch the Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors marathon on FXX while digging into bowls of candy and plates of bat wings and witch fingers.

For those who didn’t read the blog last week, we’re having some special guests briefly bounce back from retirement to make a cameo in the Season 2 finale of Screaming Soup!, the Ghouligans! Luckily, the magic of animation can’t be denied and they were more than happy to attend our Halloween blowout! Or more importantly, have you been enjoying our chuckle inducing “Bruce Campbell VS” videos? Better be, because with the excitement building for the premier of the all new Ash VS Evil Dead on the Starz network Halloween night, we’re continuing our celebration of the king of B everyday this month!
When you stop to think about it, what does it take to be the king of B movies? Most of us have this narrow perception of Bruce Campbell’s cult status based solely on his involvement in the Evil Dead franchise, with respectable nods to his others works like Xena: Warrior Princess, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., and Bubba Ho-Tep. but these are just 4 roles he’s played out of 100+ credits!
Bruce was fortunate enough to play more than one memorable character that immortalizes him in comics, action figures, video games, art, and fan favorite countdowns till the end of days, but its the entirety of his diverse work that truly earns him the credit as the king of the B movies. For the last 30 years, he’s played a baby snatching demon, been killed by cyborgs on the moon, fought Napoleon as a 19th century superhero, liberated slaves from alien oppression, battled Angus Scrimm into a meat grinder, raced Herbie the Lovebug to a photo finish . . . the list goes on and on! With Bruce returning to the role that first made him a star, we took it upon ourselves to celebrate his amazing career in movies with this edition of Screaming Tribute!
The video below contains at least one clip from nearly every piece of cinematic work Bruce has performed in. You’ll see shots from his humble Super-8 beginnings all the way to the blockbusters he stars in today. We even included clips from the cartoons and video games he’s humorously voiced as well as commercials he hammed up. We only left out his Coen brother appearances where he was barley seen in the backgrounds, voice over work that didn’t have enough (if any) of his appearance, and only a handful of obscure movies and TV shows that most aren’t even aware of.

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s the 20th of the month and that means brand spanking new Screaming Soup! for your sick pleasure! Yessiree, mark this day on your calendars because this episode is the turning point for the series. Why, you might ask? Because we’re very responsive to all your feedback and realized we’ve been starting to hit a predictable rut with our reviews.
Not so much the reviews themselves, understand, because the show must have some structure to it, but we found some Scream Freaks starting to fast forward through the endings of the animated segments. We were surprised but figured out it’s because there’s rarely any conflict among the characters for you to be eager to see resolved by the end of the episode . . . until now. The return of Buzzkill will be setting off a lot of big events in the Screaming Soup! universe that will not only be snowballing over into the next season debuting in 2016 but the next 2 seasons following that!
Big stuff, huh? And now that its close enough to time, we’re officially announcing our plans for making October the month to celebrate Bruce aka #celebruce! Howdy there, Scream Freaks! You know, sometimes these weekly updates are hard to do, because we work on future episodes so far in advance and don’t want to prematurely tip our hand to what’s coming just yet. The secondary vids, however, are pretty much being produced in the “now” and can sometimes feel rushed when we know it’s time for a new Graphic Violence or Remake Remix to be posted.
With October coming up, we wanted to do something fun for us to produce and for you to watch (obviously, because who are we without you?). With all the excitement over the premier of the new Evil Dead TV series Halloween night, Screaming Soup! has decided to dedicate the site to everything Bruce Campbell! We’ve had little to some minor success with our series of “Bruce Campbell Takes It In The Face” vids that spotlight all the gooey low blows Bruce takes on the chin in his movies, but these new vids will be less demeaning and should really register with the fans. We’ve been up all hours of the day, hurrying to pull together a daily visual celebration of not just a single movie or cult favorite franchise but the entirety of Bruce’s career from his Super 8 days to now. It’s been a tiring marathon to get all these done while trying to stay on track with Screaming Soup!’s animation schedule, but it’s going to be worth it and you won’t be disappointed!

Despite these couple of forgivable sours, this is still a sweet follow-up to the first Happy Death Day we highly recommend fans of the first one see. It ain’t as scary or thrillin’, but it makes up for it with laughs and suspense with a amazin’ tour de France performance by Jessica Rothe as Tree that made us fall in love with her for the first time again.
