SCREAMING AT BRUCE CAMPBELL AND PUMPKIN SPICE!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s been a whole year, but the season to be eerie is finally here! Stock up on the candy, plan an award winning costume, watch more horror movies than usual, and decorate your home until it looks like the undead moved in. Ah, Halloween is certainly a joyous time. What could make it better?

How about Bruce Campbell returning to the role that made him a cult star in “Ash VS Evil Dead” on the Starz network? Finally! After years of commercial build-up, knock off remakes, and fantasy superhero flicks with spy shows putting this hit horror series on the back burner, we once again get to see Ash Williams blow away deadites while dishing t-shirt one liners every which way!

But the new show doesn’t premier until Halloween night, so what are we going to do until then? Watch the same Evil Dead movies over and over again like we’ve already done for the last 20+ years? Hell no! These gorefest flicks made Bruce a star, but it was his long diverse career in film that made him the king of the B movies. He’s been to the moon, died as a cartoon, fought time travelers in the old west, wrestled the president of the united states, etc. Bruce has seen a lot, done a lot, and fought a lot of things over the decades, and we want to celebrate these moments in a crazy fun way like only Screaming Soup! can.

Everyday this month, we’re celebrating the king of the B movies with videos that’ll highlight his greatest moments in B movie history with a fun series we’re calling “Bruce Campbell VS.” By the end of the month you will have seen Bruce’s greatest battles, his greatest defeats, and most embarrassing moments as presented in video arcade glory. This will be a fun trip down memory lane for some Bruce fans and a great way to introduce his more obscure work to others.

We’ve also notice the pumpkin spice craze this season and have been appalled at some of the weirdest things companies have been adding this particular flavor to. For fun, we’re also posting a daily blog called “Mandy’s I Can’t Believe They Have Pumpkin” which will share some of your favorite products that have fallen to this disgusting demand.

The first posts for “Bruce Campbell VS” and “Mandy’s I Can’t Believe They Have Pumpkin” are below, and are the first of many to come this month, all the way through Halloween. Enjoy!

Other than that, be sure to catch up on all the latest Screaming Soup! episodes so far for season 2! Please use our social buttons in the upper right corner of the site and follow our tweets, subscribe to our Youtube channel, like our Facebook, watch and share all our vids, and keep that fan mail coming.

SCREAMING AT M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN “THE VISIT”!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! You know, we can still remember our first time watching “The Sixth Sense.” What we expected to be a simple story about a kid scared out of his mind from seeing dead people became a surprise hit with an unexpected twist ending involving the fate of the kid’s supportive psychologist played by Bruce Willis. Over night, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan became a name synonymous with suspense horror. And twists . . . which we still wonder if that was his decision to keep doing twists in his movies or the studios? We mean, the twist was unexpected in “The Sixth Sense” so it really hit home upon the first viewing. But when the twist becomes your trademark, is it really working anymore? It’s hard to continue surprising people when they’re already expecting it like the ending of a Goosebumps book trying to guess what it is halfway through the movie.

But whether the studios pressured M. Night to keep it up, or he just thought twists almost every movie was the way to go, a lot of his work were hits and misses after “The Sixth Sense” put him on the map. Far from a one hit wonder, he never quite captured that same suspense or shock of a twist since “The Sixth Sense.” That is, until the release of his newest movie, “The Visit.”

You may have seen the commercials of the grandchildren visiting their oddball grandparents for the first time, rolled your eyes, and muttered, “Oh, the grandparents are evil, blah!” We’re guilty of this as well, but we’ve seen every M. Night film in theaters so why stop now? Expecting a descent movie in the least, we were floored out how M. Night successfully reached back to his “Sixth Sense” roots and gave us a memorable story we’re still talking about today. A mother who ran away from home at a young age is contacted by her parents who want nothing more than to see their 2 grandchildren for the first time. Unsupervised, the excited children are sent out of town to stay with their grandparents for a week, and record the whole experience on cameras that gives the film a found footage point of view. The children are happy to visit with their grandparents at first, but strange behaviors slowly manifests from the elderly couple that make the children nervous. Fear for their safety escalates by the end of their visit, and time is running out to learn the secret of the grandparents before its too late.

“The Visit” should get high recognition for its casting. The kids are just the right balance of fun and annoying like real children their age, and the senior actors playing the grandparents really put it all out there (the grandmother’s bare wrinkly ass is seen more than once). The story properly sets up past troubles that motivate the protagonist’s actions throughout the film to a satisfactory ending, and the scares are simple but effective as proven by the theater crowd around us during our viewing. No gore, no CGI, no demeaning acts of inhumanity, none of that! Just the image of the woman running through the house or clawing at a door was enough to make the crowds shout and scream at the screen. It works on the most basic level, but it works.

The twist in “The Visit” is the best! M. Night actually does a great job subtly poking fun at the plots and twists in his past movies. The mystery behind the grandparents’ behavior really covers the board from the paranormal and supernatural to alien invasions. It leaves you guessing to the very end, and then when you least expect it, POW! The twist comes and your mouth drops at how simple it is but satisfying all at the same time.

This is a true testament to how basic fear is, and how little it can take to really captivate an audience when done so flawlessly as “The Visit.” We highly recommend checking out “The Visit” as soon as you can. But what do we know? We like killer tomato movies!

SCREAMING AT HALLOWEEN UPDATES!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! You know, sometimes these weekly updates are hard to do, because we work on future episodes so far in advance and don’t want to prematurely tip our hand to what’s coming just yet. The secondary vids, however, are pretty much being produced in the “now” and can sometimes feel rushed when we know it’s time for a new Graphic Violence or Remake Remix to be posted.

With October coming up, we wanted to do something fun for us to produce and for you to watch (obviously, because who are we without you?). With all the excitement over the premier of the new Evil Dead TV series Halloween night, Screaming Soup! has decided to dedicate the site to everything Bruce Campbell! We’ve had little to some minor success with our series of “Bruce Campbell Takes It In The Face” vids that spotlight all the gooey low blows Bruce takes on the chin in his  movies, but these new vids will be less demeaning and should really register with the fans. We’ve been up all hours of the day, hurrying to pull together a daily visual celebration of not just a single movie or cult favorite franchise but the entirety of Bruce’s career from his Super 8 days to now. It’s been a tiring marathon to get all these done while trying to stay on track with Screaming Soup!’s animation schedule, but it’s going to be worth it and you won’t be disappointed!

SCREAMING AT HALLOWEEN AROUND THE CORNER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! The summer has certainly blown right past us, and Halloween is just on the horizon. Yessir, before you know it, we’ll be seeing tombstones in people’s yards, ghosts in our windows, and truckloads of candy and shitty costumes in the stores! Let’s keep our fingers crossed we’ll be getting some great new horror to entertain us this October which sounds a little lacking so far. Rest assured we’re hard at work pulling together a new series of funny vids to pump out through most of October that’ll tie into our countdown to the highly anticipated “Ash VS Evil Dead” on the Starz network. You could call it our month long shout out to Bruce Campbell and it’ll be one you want to check out when its time.

Other than that, everything is going well with the show. We’re putting the final touches on some upcoming episodes we’re excited to show featuring the return of (bum, bum, buuuuuuummmm) Buzzkill, currently editing the next Graphic Violence vid for 9/10/15, and on track for preparing Screaming Soup! Season 3 for release in Jan’16. Some really great things are coming, and we’re glad you loyal fans are here to see it!

SCREAMING AT BUMP IN THE NIGHT!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Woowee! We’ve been happier than a hellhound with a chew soul after all the exciting horror updates we’ve been hearing about this week. Bill Murray is now confirmed to be making a cameo in the new Ghostbusters set for 2016, shooting has wrapped on the first season of the new Ash Vs The Evil Dead TV series, a second Beetlejuice movie is on the horizon with Michael Keaton returning, and Friday the 13th will be returning to television on the CW and with Jason Voorhees this time! How has our head not exploded yet?

So, once again it’s time for us to turn our attention to a more childish side of horror and look at some good ol’ fashion cartoons with what we call Re-Animated Review. This time around, we look at a short lived but memorable stop-motion show called “Bump in the Night.” We fondly remember seeing this air on the ABC network when they were still playing Saturday morning cartoons and it hasn’t lost any appeal after all these years. Check out the review below and relive your monster filled childhood!

SCREAMING AT HORROR REBOOTS AND REMAKES!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s Friday and some new summer movies have just been released to our displeasure in the theaters! One of which is the new Fantastic Four reboot, which has been taking a real beating from the reviews we’ve read from comic fans. The one consistent argument seems to be how the filmmakers missed the mark with what fans expected from these flagship Marvel characters, making them yearn for the 2000’s version that deserved more appreciation. Instead, Hollywood has dished out a hollow superhero story spackled with CGI shit to cover up its shortcomings. This super misfire got us thinking about how pissed we actually are at movies that get constantly rebooted, telling us the same stories over and over again, when we honestly think it would benefit everyone to just keep moving forward with new characters and adventures each cinematic reincarnation.

For instance, we just heard rumors there will be a reboot of the Nightmare on Elm St. series . . . Again! What the fuck? We just had a reboot not that long ago, and sure, maybe not everyone liked it, but it was decent in our opinion. Horror fans don’t want to see the same damn origin tale rehashed like with the Spider-Man movies. How many times can we pay to see the same story? Just move forward and tell a new nightmare with Freddy! He’s immortal after all, and Springwood isn’t stuck in any particular time period for him to terrorize, so simply tell a modern story with our favorite boogey man! That’s what they kind of did when they rebooted Friday the 13th which was a mixed failure. I thought we were finally going to see the story between Jason’s drowning and his resurrection as a full grown mongoloid, but no! We just get a plot that was really a sad sequel minus Jason rediscovering the hockey mask. That whole missing part of his origin could have been the hallmark of the movie, but instead we have a forgettable plot that leaves this movie blending in to the other more memorable sequels. And yes, despite arguments every Friday movie is the same, each did have that one memorable moment/situation unlike the reboot:

Friday The 13th: Jason’s mother seeks revenge.

Friday the 13th Part 2: Jason avenges his mother’s death.

Friday the 13th Part 3: Jason finds the hockey mask.

Friday the 13th Part 4: Jason’s death.

Friday the 13th Part 5: Tommy’s epilogue.

Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason returns as the living dead.

Friday the 13th Part 7: Jason fights a telekinetic.

Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason stalks the streets of Manhattan.

Friday the 13th Part 9: Jason is killed and shown he can jump bodies.

Jason X: Jason kills in space.

Freddy VS Jason: Two of horror’s favorite icons go head to head in combat.

Friday the 13th (reboot): He . . . uh . . . protects his dope?

We honestly think a couple of reboots that got it right were the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. Before you get too up in arms, these films were guilty of some poor decisions that left us scratching our heads (Like the first TCM reboot having no cannibalism and R. Lee Ermey stealing the show with his performance), but they gave fans new material with insight into these super villains of horror. While some thought it was too much backstory, we actually liked the first half of the new Halloween with the exploration into Myer’s time in the mental hospital which is the kind of thing we thought they were going to do with the Friday reboot.

And how the hell could New Line miss such a golden opportunity to release a 13th Friday the 13th movie on Friday the 13th in 2013?! That was like the stars aligning for some epic prophecy, but they completely dropped the ball. Just like they did with failing to celebrate Freddy’s 30th anniversary in 2014. We didn’t see anyone doing any special for that!

Anyway, we’re starting to ramble. Bottom line, STOP forcing the same shit on fans over and over again and give us something new and different with our favorite characters while staying familiar and fun.

SCREAMING AT THE PASSING OF HORROR ACTORS IN 2015!

Howdy there Scream Freaks! We like keeping our ear to the ground and informing you of anything we think is worth knowing about regarding horror news, and one particular subject has been popping up a lot! We’re only a little more than half way through the year, but the horror community has already lost several memorable actors from notable works in the genre. Here’s an overview of those who passed away in 2015 thus far in no particular order:

Christopher Lee (Hammer films, Star Wars saga, Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Wicker Man, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Howling II, Sleepy Hollow)

Betsy Palmer (Friday the 13th)

Robert Z’Dar (Maniac Cop 1-3)

Roddy Piper (They Live, Hell Comes to Frogtown)

Tom Towles (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, Night of the Living Dead (1990), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Halloween (2007), The Pit and the Pendulum (1991) and The Prophecy II)

Alex Rocco (The Entity, Lady in White, Return to Horror High and Blood Mania)

Aubrey Morris (A Clockwork Orange, The Wicker Man, Lifeforce, Bordello of Blood, Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb)

Robert Harris (Cabin Fever)

Patrick Macne (Howling, Twilight Zone, Night Gallery and Tales from the Darkside)

Rick Ducommun (Scary Movie, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Little Monsters, Blank Check and Ghost in the Machine)

Elizabeth Wilson (The Addams Family, The Birds, The Graduate, Dark Shadows and The Incredible Shrinking Woman)

Richard Dysart (The Thing, Prophecy)

Geoffrey Lewis (Devil’s Rejects, The Lawnmower Man, Night of the Comet and Trilogy of Terror II)

Gregory Walcott (Plan 9 From Outer Space)

Daniel von Bargen (The Silence of the Lambs, The Faculty, Lord of Illusions, Thinner and RoboCop 3)

Ben Woolf (American Horror Story)

Louis Jourdan (Swamp Thing, Return of Swamp Thing)

See what I mean? Luckily, most of these were deaths due to natural causes like old age, but it’s still hard to say good-bye and be reminded of their impressions on us through their works that continue to speak to future generations beyond the veil of death.

SCREAMING AT ASH VS EVIL DEAD TRAILER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s finally happening! Bruce Campbell returns to the role that made him the king of B 10/31/15 in “Ash vs Evil Dead” on the Starz network! For years, I’ve been ridiculed that this would never happen, but now those neh-sayers can suck a fat one. We’ve had Evil Dead aka Army of Darkness comics, musicals, and a re-make to help pass the time these last 20+ years with, but now we get the legit continuance of Ash’s journey that made him arguably the greatest horror movie hero of all time.

What’s even better is the involvement of Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi who’ll be directing the first episode of what looks to be a kick-ass series full of epic fights and storyline. This definitely makes up for all those times Sam Raimi pissed me off over the years when I’d watch movies of his post “Army of Darkness” like “Drag Me to Hell” that could have easily been made into an “Evil Dead” sequel. Not to mention all those times he’d tease/acknowledge horror fans with his Evil Dead antics briefly popping up in other movies he’d directed,  like that scene in “Spider-Man 2” when Doc Ock’s tentacles are killing everyone in the operation room. That scene had me wishing they had cast Bruce Campbell as the surgeon fighting his tentacles with the chainsaw instead of the doorman who keeps Spider-Man from a date.

Now, there are some who are probably disappointed that they’re producing a TV series as opposed to a full fledge/high budget movie, but I think this is better. We’ve been waiting decades for more adventures with Ash, and this allows us to really be involved with the character and take our time with him instead of a wham bam thank you ma’m hour and a half on a movie screen until who knows when! We’ve been really pumped about this, and our heads are about to explode after seeing the trailer they released which can be seen below.

Other than that, that’s all we really have to talk about right now. Be sure you’re caught up with the rest of Screaming Soup! Season 2 and come back here 7/20/15 for the next exciting episode of Screaming Soup! SCREAMING AT THE THING!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Hope you enjoyed the 4th of July as much as we did. While you were shoving hot dogs in your faces, cannon balling into the shallow end, and running to the emergency room to treat firework injuries, we were having a Thing marathon!

The Thing has to be one of the scariest horrors imagined. That is, the alien from “John Carpenter’s The Thing.” The original Howard Hawks “Thing From Another World” was about a damn vegetable man trying to bash everyone. No, Carpenter definitely tapped into some great body horror with a whole reimagining of this monster attacking from the inside, representing what could arguably be a loose metaphor for fears at the time like AIDs. A monster whose every cell is its own entity, willing to do anything to survive, causing everyone who comes in contact with it to become paranoid and crazily anti-social for fear of being infected by the merest touch. Dark Horse comics was cool enough to continue the ’82 movie’s storyline in the 90’s with a few mini-series titled after the original movie, “Thing From Another World,” and was a great follow up for horror fans that didn’t disappoint. When interest picked back up in the late 2000’s to take another cinematic pass at such a influential movie, the filmmakers wisely told a story not even the comics did which is the obliteration of the Norwegian camp that dug up the Thing before it arrived at the American research station in the ’82 version. In retrospect, the 2011 story was good. The filmmaker really did their research, and the scene where the guy is combined into the 2 headed monster is pretty unsettling. The only shortcoming was the digital effects that just didn’t stand up to Rob Bottin’s slimy creature designs from the 80’s. It all felt too artificial and wasn’t really as gross as it should have been. We still hold the worst effect to be the transformation in the helicopter. It just didn’t look organic at all, but more like a jigsaw puzzle breaking apart with clean CGI wire innards blowing out!

Anyway, we got on a Thing kick and heard a KISS song recently that inspired us to edit together another Re-Make Re-Mix video for you Scream Freaks we hope you enjoy. It shows you all the good parts from the original Howard Hawks movies and most the goodies from the remakes. Enjoy!

And be on the lookout for the next episode of Screaming Soup! coming 7/20/15!
