Howdy there, Scream Freaks! That annual belly buster known as Turkey Day is upon us ‘gain, and we’ve got plenty to be thankful fer!
First off, we just got back from one of our favorite cons still willin’ to allow us in the door — RETRO TOY CON! Presented by our amigos at Toy Federation, this playful plastic pickin’ weekend was one fer the history books we tell ya what. Three days of toy huntin’, pizza parties, lobby/room/and parkin’ lot toy swappin’, celebrity meet and greets, costume contests, panel discussions, and listenin’ to our big yap act as the emcee of the event, doin’ our best to keep folks entertained ‘tween announcements with jokes ’bout signin’ petitions fer a Popples panel and findin’ us a Polly Pocket fer our Mighty Max.
While we did manage to score some new shelf fillers from obscure Bad Eggz Bunch to bargain bin Goombas from the ’93 Mario Bros. movie (with the coats still attached! Whoa!!), the biggest highlights were the friends and memories we made. We screamed He-Man know-it-all Pixel Dan‘s name whenever he walked by (much to his annoyance, we’re sure), swapped YouTube war stories with toy fanatic Shartimus Prime, shared our favorite hot dog hang-outs with Eddie Deezen, got the skinny on Retro Toy Quest‘s new Toy Collector’s Wishbook, joked a little with WWE Hall of Famers the Steiner Brothers, and talked ’bout the current state of the film biz with Star Wars alum Chris Parsons.
The headliner of the week, however, was the reunion of the creative forces behind the ’92 X-Men cartoon from Fox Kids, and we can’t tell ya how wild it is to get to know the voices behind characters we have such fond memories of from childhood. George “Beast” Buza entertained us with tales from the set of The Brain (1988) with him playing a henchman eaten by a giant rubber monster of gray matter. Alyson “Jubilee” Court was kind ‘nough to say those famous lines of hers as Lydia on the Beetlejuice cartoon over the intercom system. Roscoe “Ms. Marvel” Handford gave us some good laughs over her photos with our Screaming Soup! props. We had a terrific sit down with Lenore “Rogue” Zann discussin’ her time playin’ Sizzle on the long forgotten Stunt Dawgs cartoon. Cal “The Wolverine” Dodd was a hoot and a half with his displeasure over some obnoxious boom box playin’ a butchered version of Wipe Out. And the ringleaders of this mutant circus, showrunners Eric and Julia Lewald with Mark Edens, were some of the kindest, most approachable folks anyone could ask to meet. The best time we had with ’em was talkin’ ’bout how many western flicks influenced the scripts fer X-Men, Exo-Squad, and Spiral Zone while tradin’ some of the dumbest jokes we could think of! If ya haven’t bought either of Eric and Julia’s books on the makin’ of the X-Men series, do yourself a favor and snatch these up NOW. Previously on X-Menhas a ton of interviews with the cartoon’s cast and creators while featurin’ a ton of behind trivia per episode, and X-Men: The Art and Making of The Animated Series simply explodes with an unbelievable ‘mount of production art and notes not seen in most books based on toons from this era.
In addition to this overload of excitement, we also got to behold one mother of a 3D printin’ project an up and comin’ toy company blessed the con with — a LARGER than life reproduction of the original Masters of the Universe toy line by True Legacy Design. We’re talkin’ HUGE He-Man figures with all the same action gimmicks accompanied by unbelievably proportioned vehicles and playsets. Unreal, right? Currently workin’ on gettin’ the licensin’ rights from Mattel, True Legacy Design hopes to start sellin’ these bad mama jammas to the public in the near future and already started their own YouTube channel to get news buzzin’ on this incredible venture of theirs. Who knows? Maybe they can help us produce some Screaming Soup! figures!
Speakin’ of Screaming Soup! products, we finally got in the rest of the merch this week for the upcomin’ Screaming Soup! Fan Club Kit, and it’s shaped up to be one sweet package of tangible goodies. Just in time too, ’cause he’s still game fer Wolfie’s plan to reunite Drac’s ol’ gang as part of his new regime, and the next guy we’re wranglin’ in’s gonna make one helluva splashy entrance. Rumor has it the long missin’ gill creature’s been sighted ’round the Crosslands’ favorite distraction Draculand, and let us tell ya — lookin’ for a creep ‘mong a sea of creeps in a fantasy getaway slammed with wall to wall theme park rides, mazes, and other sweet attractions ain’t gonna be easy. Parkin’s gonna be ‘nough of a nightmare!

Just when we didn’t think it could get any better than yappin’ with every cast and crew member involved with our favorite cult series, somethin’ like this happens and makes us feel like we’re now part of that incredible history. Howdy there, Scream Freaks! After ’bout a year of video silence, we proudly return with our greatest triumph yet, provin’ once ‘gain why we’re the web’s #1 animated horror host show. Just as memorable as our epic season long crossover with Charles Band, as awesome as sharin’ the QnA stage with the likes of Kane Hodder, and as special as gettin’ worldwide recognition from Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder’s The Last Drive-In, we now cross paths with ‘nother icon of horror whose arrival sent shockwaves through the world of cult cinema that’s still enjoyed today. We’re talkin’, ‘course, ’bout Killer Tomatoes.
We originally planned on a Screaming Soup! special on the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movies to be our swan song after 100 episodes, but once we accepted the reality of our tedious production schedule, and the fact the talents involved with makin’ the Killer Tomatoes aren’t gettin’ any younger, we decided 50 episodes and the validation we achieved from receivin’ Joe Bob’s Silver Bolo Award in 2021 was a good ‘nough time to cross this off our bucket list. We’re still producin’ ‘nother 50 Screaming Soup! episodes, mind ya, we’re just sayin’ this passion project of ours got significantly bumped up.
As filmbuffs and lifelong fans of the Killer Tomatoes franchise since first seein’ the cartoon while gobblin’ action figures up with our Killer Tomato toys, we always hated how there were never any behind-the-scenes featurettes or tell-all books ‘yond the makin’ of the first Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie from 1978. IMDb, magazine articles, online interviews . . . it was all the same decades ol’ scraps of information and movie plot synopsis. Nothin’ answered the real burnin’ questions we had fer how this cult flick oddity by a gang of nerds outta San Diego managed to explode into a pop culture phenomenon as a toy sellin’ Saturday mornin’ cartoon ’round the world. Frustrated by this constant lack of knowledge, we finally took it upon ourselves to collect these factoids for the sake of Killer Tomato fans everywhere, and be the first EVER to share the WHOLE story behind this underdog franchise.
It all started with us contactin’ producer/writer Steve Peace who fans know better as their favorite parachute draggin’ Tomato War vet Lt. Wilbur Finletter. Steve and his filmmakin’ partners producer/writer/director John DeBello and writer/Killer Tomatoes creator Costa Dillon formed Four Square Productions when they began their film careers as teenagers makin’ Super 8 movies, and we managed to dig up a phone number fer that business online. “You’re lucky I even picked up. This may very well be the last workin’ landline in the world,” Steve laughed after feelin’ a strange compulsion to answer our call. Fillin’ him in on us bein’ horror hosts and expressin’ our interest in doin’ a retrospective that finally paints the whole picture ‘hind the history of the Killer Tomatoes, Steve was more than accommodatin’ and connected us with DeBello and Costa who happily granted us our first interviews for the retrospective which greatly helped lay the bones for the Killer Tomatoes timeline additional interviews with cast and crew from each movie could add meat to.
With help from Four Square, IMDb Pro, and good ol’ fashion gumshoe work, we managed to round up and interview most everyone involved with the series fer the retrospective. Recordin’ our conversations over Zoom, we had an incredible year yakkin’ it up with Olympic gold medalists, Miss Universe winners, soap opera stars, folks who worked on sets like Super Mario Bros. and Married . . . With Children, stand-up comics, heavy hittin’ talents ‘hind The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, and not to mention — John “Gomez Addams” Astin which was the most unbelievable two hours spent durin’ all this as he shared nearly a 100 years worth of stories in the entertainment biz from Hollywood to Broadway. All these folks are such amazin’ talents and the nicest, funniest people anyone could hope to talk with ’bout killer veggies. Woulda been nice to say we got to chew the fat with George Clooney, ‘course, but believe you us — if there’s anyone missin’ from this sucker, it ain’t fer lack of tryin’! It either means we couldn’t reach ’em at all or they plain said, “No.”
So, that brings us to now. After ’bout a year editin’ twenty plus hours of interview footage down to a hair over three, we’re proud to present the most in-depth, be-all end-all tell-all retrospective on the ENTIRE history of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes series includin’ Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Return of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back, Killer Tomatoes Eat France, and both seasons of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon series that originally aired on Fox Children’s Network. We cover Four Square’s first studio picture Sour Grapes aka Happy Hour, Elvira’s ribbin’ the original flick on late night TV, the unofficially licensed video games, the tomatoes’ resurgence thanks to the Muppet Babies, the reason why no restaurant wanted to use killer tomatoes for an ad campaign, the real story ‘hind the cartoon’s cancellation, and MORE!
And to provide as much Killer Tomato history as possible, we do include a few snippets of information gathered from home video bonus features and other content creators’ web shows, but all sources have been properly credited and handled much the same way as a research paper with links to their original work in the description of the video. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Retrospective is strictly a non-profit documentary made for the purpose to educate and inform fans interested in the history of the Killer Tomatoes franchise under Fair Use (Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976) as well as a creative reunion of sorts for the talents who are excited to see one another after decades apart. Everyone involved with this video from Screaming Soup! HQ to the interviewees participated in this out of the goodness of their heart for no other gain than to laugh at rememberin’ the best times they ever had makin’ these movies.
Now, enjoy this love letter to one of our favorite movie franchises of all time! It ain’t perfect, but we gave it all we got and then some. TOMATOES!!!!

Ho-Ho-Howdy there, Scream Freaks! The season of slasher Santas, rabid reindeer, and yuletide yetis is upon us ‘gain. Yup, it’s Christmas time! Brick up that fireplace, protect yer chestnuts, and don’t shake yer gifts under the tree too hard — they might just bite! This Christmas is sure to be the most frightenin’ one yet, and we owe a lot of that to a particular streamin’ service.
December kicked off beautifully with the theatrical release of Violent Night starrin’ Stranger Things‘ David Harbour as a kick-ass Santa rescuin’ a family of fat cat hostages from home invadin’ mercs in Die Hard fashion. A 5/5 romp full of serious silliness, we wanted to cover it as an R-Rated Review, but it clearly ain’t a horror flick with its top shelf fantasy/action sequences, so we decided ‘gainst it. That didn’t stop our favorite ghost girlfriend Mandy from sharin’ her two cents on what’s now our newest holiday tradition, however, and she was even quoted by Violent Night‘s Twitter account! So proud of her!!
Like every Christmas, while folks are on the hunt fer ’em perfect gifts that prove they’re not as selfish as everyone thinks, we’re huntin’ fer this year’s newest offerin’s of holiday themed terrors. We covered some of the more front and center promoted fright flicks like Weredeer, The Killing Tree, Nutcracker Massacre, and Shudder’s Christmas Bloody Christmas in bite-size reviews on our R-Rated Review blog, but putrid polecats — we just uncovered a whole treasure trove (or dung heap?) of Christmas horror movies on Tubi we never heard of!
Some new, some old, and all of ’em lookin’ like they were shot over weekends on a paperboy’s salary! Titles we discovered include Psycho Santa 1-2, He Knows, There’s Snow Escape, A Christmas Slay, Season’s Greetings 1-2, Slayed, Christmas Craft Fair Massacre, Christmas Blood, Happy Horror Days, Deadly Xmas, Axemas 1-2, Jack Frost (2022), Christmas Tapes, Christmas Vacation, Killer Christmas Elves: The Movie, Krampus: The Return, Krampus vs Big Foot, Vikings vs Krampus, Sister Krampus, Christmas Apparition, Stuffings, Mercy Christmas, Silent Night Zombie Night, I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday, Leech, and Silent Night (2021). Most of these are still available to watch fer free on Tubi as of this post, and we’re tryin’ to get through as many as we can, so keep yer peepers peeled for these R-Rated Reviews!
In bigger updates, the trailer dropped for our upcomin’ Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Retrospective! Howdy there, Scream Freaks! After weeks full of holiday parties, noisy parades, and belly bustin’ dinners, most folks would double over dead from exhaustion, but not us! We dropped dead forever ago and feel more alive than EVER as Thanksgivin’ returns, encouragin’ us to admit things we’re thankful fer.
Right now, we’re most thankful for bein’ a part of Retro-Toy Con recently, which is this unbelievable toy convention thrown by our compadres over at Toy Federation. These guys know how to party, let us tell ya. Not only did they make sure to pack the dealer room with an unbelievable mix of toys from yesteryear and today rangin’ from obscure Freddy Krueger knockoffs to mainstream mainstays like Star Wars and G.I. Joe, they even booked all kinds of celebrity guests from our favorite Saturday morning cartoons, Friday the 13th Part 2, the WWE hall of fame, and let’s not forget — yer favorite animated horror host Deadwest!
Yessir, as part of the star line-up, we happily spent the weekend meetin’ you Scream Freaks who showed up while as well as tradin’ quips with wrasslers Hacksaw Jim and the Million Dollar Man, doin’ Cobra Commander impressions with Arthur Burghardt (G.I. Joe’s original Destro), sharin’ candy with Jem and the Holograms‘ Samantha Newark, slingin’ back drinks at the bar with Warrington Gillette aka the first Jason Voorhees to kill onscreen, hangin’ ten with the first gang of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles actors, Rob Paulsen, Cam Clarke, Townsend Coleman, and Barry Gordon, and catchin’ up with our amigos Mark McCray and Dan Klink from The Best Saturday Mornings of Our Lives podcast. Fanboy overload, right? Even better, we got to be Retro-Toy Con’s MC the whole time, makin’ important ’round the clock announcements while teasin’ the other guests with random messages. “Attention Hacksaw Jim. We checked, and we’re sorry, but you can’t use yer 2×4 when thumb wrasslin’ yer fans.”
Sure to go down as one of the greatest achievements of our afterlives was Rob and Arthur complimentin’ our pipes. Words can’t describe what receivin’ that kinda validation means to us comin’ from such talented voicebox dynamos. Only other moment that comes close to beatin’ it was at the end of the con, when we zipped from one cartoon superstar to the next for closin’ statements with the best one bein’ Samantha sayin’, “Show’s over, Synergy.”

And if that weren’t ‘nough of a treat, we even had the honor of hostin’ all the celebrity panels! We asked Warrington ’bout his journey from Wall Street broker to bein’ celebrated as one of the few actors to play Jason over a little kumbaya campfire, and he pitched fans an offer to own a part of his newest flick, Bloody Social. Arthur Burghardt held our hand in shock as we revealed our interest in him takin’ us down memory lane to when he was a magic hobo in Full Moon’s Killjoy. The panel that was the most fun fer us, however, was forcin’ Hacksaw Jim and Ted “The Million Dollar Man” Dibiase to sit through a slideshow of their greatest hits in plastic as they gave their feedback on all the different toys made in their image over the years. We forgot to record our pow-wow with Arthur like dumbasses, but we’ll be sharin’ the audio from the panels with Warrington, Hacksaw, and Dibiase ‘fore long, so y’all can get a taste of the fun we had.
Speakin’ of yappin’ with talents, we even managed to steal Rob and Cam away from their turtle fans long ‘nough to interview ’em fer their work on the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon series for our Killer Tomato Retrospective we’ve been teasin’. Cam not only played Gangreen’s evil sidekick, Igor; he even voiced one of the killer tomatoes from the second season ‘long with Rob’s mutant veggie, Mummato. We still can’t believe our luck! We’re incredibly thankful fer their participation in our project and can’t wait to add their clips of ’em playin’ with their mutant tomato chew toys with everyone else’s stories of bein’ in such a wonderfully wacky series.
Speakin’ of the Killer Tomatoes Retrospective — UPDATE — We’re comin’ closer and closer to completin’ this bucket list of a dream project. Editin’ is just ’bout done, the animation shouldn’t take too long, and after we drop in the soundtrack –POW! We hope to have this sucker out there for y’all to enjoy ‘fore Valentine’s Day! Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Halloween’s just ’round the bend, and we’re burstin’ with excitement at what all this holiday season has in store. From revisitin’ Salem with the Sanderson Sisters to reimagining Hellraiser, we’re pumped to go into this spooky shindig with jack-o-lanterns blazin’, but it won’t all be monster movie marathons and stuffin’ our pie holes with Halloween Oreos (which we swear taste better than regular ol’ Oreos). No, in fact, we’re continuin’ to keep our noses to the grindstone and work diligently to churn out one helluva of a retrospective spotlightin’ one of our favorite franchises of all time . . . Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
Now, we’ve already been teasin’ y’all fer what to expect from this passion project of ours, but as we draw closer to wrappin’ this puppy up, the more freely we’re willin’ to share more ’bout it. As mentioned ‘fore, this ain’t gonna be yer everyday talkin’ head review. No, siree. Inspired by documentaries like Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, Pennywise: The Story of It, and In Search of Darkness, we wanted to go all in on this sucker and dig up as much behind the scenes trivia as possible.
That’s why the first folks we looked up to satisfy our appetite fer factoids were the creators themselves, Four Square Productions. Director John DeBello, Writer Costa Dillon, Actor/Producer Steve Peace, and even the elusive Michael Grant from the Tomatoes’ initial inception durin’ Four Square’s college origins all lend their stories to what made this San Diego born idea into a pop culture phenomenon. These fellas are just as funny today as they were 30 years ago, and have been a blast to talk with. They told us all ’bout the infamous helicopter crash, their invasion on France, their dealin’s with big league studios, and goin’ from cult hit to Saturday Mornin’ fodder.
But we didn’t stop there. Bein’ the sticklers fer information we are, we wanted more than mere milestones in the Tomatoes’ history, and sought out juicy details from every one of the movies’ cast and crew member willin’ to talk to us — which it turns out — was a lot of ’em! From leadin’ comic hero Rick Rockwell and Miss Universe’s Angela Visser to the puppeteers and composers, we managed to chat it up with ’bout every talent behind and in front of the camera and collected ourselves a shoppin’ cart worth of stories worth sharin’. Malfunctionin’ puppets, alternate R-Rated cuts, sleazy fan letters — it hurts not bein’ able to share it all yet! Oh, and did we mention John Astin and Steve Lundquist are in the retrospective too?
We’re coverin’ Killer Tomato topics related to the toys, Elvira, Four Square’s flick Sour Grapes aka Happy Hour — hell, we even do a deep dive into the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon series featurin’ interviews with its head writer, Richard Mueller, and Maurice LaMarche, the voice of Zoltan! How cool is that?!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Woowee, this is one special occasion! Not only do we have an all new episode of Screaming Soup! to serve y’all, but this sucker’s got two — count it — TWO times the horror hosts to enjoy! That’s right. We’ve been promisin’ a crossover with more of our horror lovin’ contemporaries on YouTube, and this time out, we’re lucky ‘nough to share the small screen with none other than Doctor Wolfula!
Everyone’s favorite Scooby-Doo obsessed Wolfulite first visited our show as one of our many guest stars helpin’ celebrate our 50th episode, and his splatter happy appearance was a particular favorite ‘mong fans. Disappointed we were too busy that hectic episode to officially run into Wolfula, we made it our mission to rectify that with a legit meetin’ of our twisted minds in this latest episode featurin’ our introduction to the Crossland’s version of Frankenstein. What better ‘cuse fer a crossover, right?! Lucky fer us, our fellow Silver Bolo winner agreed and happily lent his talents to help us wrangle in this science fair oddity as we shoot the shit on a helluva copycat flick, Robo Vampire!
Lucky ‘nough to first discover this movie at the video store thanks to its bogus box art, we had the displeasure of goin’ into this sucker blind and comin’ out a more deranged fan of horror and Robocop. A miraculous misfire of ambitious short-cut filmmakin’, this Robo knock-off is what introduced us to the shameless practice of international rip-offs, cut-and-paste filmmakin’, and the wildly prolific filmography of Godfrey Ho, the Ed Wood of Hong Kong, that includes two loose sequels to Robo Vampire. Putrid polecats! As cinematic masochists, we couldn’t help but cover this falsely advertised trilogy fer yer benefit and even came up with a fun way to recap its source material fer a few laughs with us jazzin’ up Robocop’s origin story with clips from all his commercials and PR stunts over the decades. That was alotta fun!
But we’re sharin’ too much! Jump down and watch the episode already and don’t bash us fer what happens to Doctor Wolfula, alright? That’s all his idea fer how he exits the show!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Y’all may recall awhile back our comin’ face to face with one of horror’s heaviest hitters, and what a bitter sweet encounter that was. Kane Hodder blew through our neck of the woods fer an appearance at our favorite toy chest fer yesteryear and today’s playful plastics, Toy Federation, and as with many of the store’s guests, we anxiously anticipated an interview with Kane that would shed some light on his more obscure body of work outside the Jason and Victor Crowley movies. With him bein’ a professional fall guy turned monster suit actor turned regular thespian, we had no shortage of questions regardin’ his stints on popular TV shows like Who’s the Boss? and experiences actin’ ‘longside such high profile talents as Charlize Theron and Steven Seagal.
If ya read that blog by Mandy, however, then ya already know our attempt at that interview was nothin’ short of disappointin’. Kane just politely refused to do an interview and that was that, respectfully. He still answered any and all our questions from the word on ‘nother Muck movie to why Death House sucked so hard it blew, but just not in front of a camera. Mind ya, Kane was still a fantastic guy to meet, and we even spent the next day hangin’ ’round him as he signed autographs and jump scared unsuspectin’ customers, but we always regretted not bein’ able to add him to our growin’ roster of interviews.
Fast forward a few months, our second chance came, and we death gripped that sucker for all its worth!
Kane was swingin’ back by Toy Federation fer ‘nother store signin’, but this time he’d cap the night off with a showy QnA ‘fore an outdoor screenin’ of Jason Takes A Cruise To Canada. After makin’ arrangements fer us to host the QnA on the store’s behalf, we made sure to have cameras on the scene and capture the night’s festivities with Kane’s awareness. After a humorous half hour or so of him tellin’ stories from Hollywood and answerin’ fans’ all too familiar questions, we finally had the footage we needed to make an interview special!
Unlike our usual interviews with celebrities in a corner of the store bein’ asked a handful of questions, this video was more challengin’ to produce, ’cause it was an actual event and called fer a more creative presentation which is fun and different. Takin’ a laughable out of context approach akin to the kinda comedy Space Ghost: Coast to Coast is best known for, we dropped Kane into a completely animated world and exaggeratin’ the events that unfolded that night with our show’s characters in place of Kane’s real life cheer section.
A perfect example of this exaggeration is our overreaction to Kane’s answer to whether or not he’s ever met one of his own heroes from the silver screen. Our one and only deep cut question ‘fore the fans could claim him, and he confusingly talks ’bout how blessed he is to have played Jason so many times. Did he mishear us or forget what the question was altogether? We’ll never know, but it makes fer great comedy we hope y’all enjoy while learnin’ somethin’ new ’bout the man recognized for the most kills on film.

Whether y’all like it or not, it’s Valentine’s Day, and yer either that lucky stiff bein’ showered with affectionate nick knacks sweet ‘nough to tease a diabetic coma or an apathetic wreck drownin’ some disturbin’ loneliness in top shelf depressants while soul churnin’ emo tunes play at full blast. Or maybe yer butt’s in the recliner happily rewatchin’ some of yer favorite holiday horrors like Valentine or the My Bloody Valentine flicks.
However y’all celebrate this greetin’ card invention, we hope yer lucky ‘nough to love and be loved today, especially durin’ such crazy times that’ve more than tested relationships new and old. As fer you Scream Freaks still lookin’ fer that arm candy of yer twisted dreams, we have just the thang!

Last Valentine’s, we introduced a new line of grade school inspired Valentine’s Day Eeeh-Cards! featurin’ our monstrous mugs, and folks got pretty good mileage out of ’em.
