SCREAMING AT SEASON 4 FINALE UPDATES AND LEATHERFACE!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Halloween is upon us, and our biggest season yet is comin’ close to an epic end! Apologies for not releasin’ it at the usual time you’ve grown accustomed to, but this episode is pretty damn important, and we wanna make sure it gets done right! Multiple fights, lots of wrap-ups, teases at what next season brings, and four new reviews of Troma’s Toxic Avenger series! You can’t wait, and neither can we which is why we’re workin’ ’round the clock to get this up on Halloween or the day before.

While burnin’ the midnight oils, we did manage to see the new Leatherface flick, and tarnations what a stinker! That is, it’s an alright movie that’s well shot and acted, but it just didn’t need to be a sequel/prequel/remake/reboot/whatever to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. Here’s what we had to say in our weekly R-Rated Review Blog here at the site:

LEATHERFACE (2017)

After bein’ taken away from his po’ hog raisin’ family for 10 years, a teenage Sawyer escapes the loony bin with a pack of crazies and makes his way back home on a killin’ spree while draggin’ along an attractive nurse as a hostage. As a stand alone movie, this ain’t a bad flick to check out with crisp cinematography, strong actin’, and more than one creepy moment. But as the newest entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, this was worse than The Next Generation. The biggest problem bein’ this red herrin’ bullshit the filmmakers pull most the movie, makin’ us guess which escaped loon is even Leatherface, because the state pointlessly changed his name after he was committed. This is really distractin’ and completely robs me of the sick joy watchin’ a Chainsaw prequel/reboot/remake or whatever the hell this is in the series’ turbulent continuity. And when the real Leatherface does finally stand up at the very end, it’s such an ridiculous slap to the face that I’m left wishin’ for more Michael Bay chainsaw flicks! I’d recommend this to the casual movie goer and super die-hard Chainsaw fans, but it’s just gonna piss off a lot of us regular slasher fans lookin’ for a reunion with the Sawyer family. Rubber room riots, squished girls, roadkill disguises, gunshots to the face, head bashin’, mice stuffed in women’s mouths, boonie executions, evidence eatin’ hogs, pack of killer hogs, throat slittin’, decapitations, chainsaw chases, one human face mask, severed hands, cannibal meal preppin’, knives through necks, diner chaos, folks carved like turkeys, crazies hidin’ in dead cattle, and a burned-up woman havin’ a threesome with a corpse! 3/5!

So, now you have 3-4 Chainsaw timelines dependin’ on how lenient you wanna be with the details. Timeline one is TCM, TCM2, Leatherface: TCM3, and TCM: The Next Generation. Timeline two is Michael Bay’s TCM 1-2. Timeline three is TCM: Leatherface, TCM,  and Texas Chainsaw 3D. Or you could even accept a fourth timeline that’s TCM: Leatherface, TCM, TCM2, Leatherface: TCM3, and TCM: The Next Generation. A lot of you may not wanna include TCM: The Next Generation because of how awkward it fits into the timeline with Leatherface’s family and everythin’, but I like to think some powerful corporate nutjobs are conductin’ some wacko experiment with fear and somehow captured Leatherface to be one of the killers in the experiment.

We know a lot of y’all are gonna be partyin’ it up this weekend, so we raise our glasses to the spirit of Halloween and wish ya a memorable one! Don’t forget the night can promise as many tricks as treats, never tug on a ghost’s sheet, and keep those jack-o-lanterns burnin’. Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We’re in the thick of October now and feel the excitement buildin’ with Halloween right around the corner. Houses decked out in creepy decorations, scary flicks playin’ all over TV, store aisles overflowin’ with cavity causin’ candy . . . most wonderful time of the year, I tell you what! And what Halloween hootenanny would be complete without the annual Screaming Soup! season finale full of outrageous pranks, frightful fights, and monstrous mayhem?

The season 4 finale is still in the works, but we’re aimin’ for it to be released no later than Halloween day. As mentioned before, there’s a LOT in this 30+ minute episode comin’ up. We’re wrappin’ up a lot of tensions among characters, endin’ the crossover with Full Moon, teasin’ at things to come in season 5, and reviewin’ the entire Toxic Avenger series. You know, when we started Screaming Soup! we managed tight stories that could be produced into full 15 minute episodes within 3 weeks. When we decided to go all out and make Season 4 as big as we could make it with Full Moon’s involvement, we suddenly found ourselves needin’ four to sometimes six weeks to complete a 20-40 minute episode. There’s more characters, backgrounds, voices, and reviews in this than any other season of Screaming Soup! The first 3 seasons, it would take us 10 months to produce 10 episodes with 12-13 film reviews. This season, 10 episodes took us 16 months to complete with a total of 35 reviews. Our skeleton crew put about 3 seasons worth of work into one and we think it came out pretty damn well!

To hold you over ’til we break out this explosive finale, be sure to visit our blogs for comedic bite size reviews. We’re always updatin’ our R-Rated Review blog as soon as we watch a horror flick and just updated our Sequential Slime reviews of some horror flick-related comics we just picked up. And so you’re in the loop, our appearance at Alchemy Comedy last week went well, but our cameraman unfortunately had technical issues that prevented it from bein’ recorded. Major bummer given we were plannin’ on puttin’ that video up for y’all to enjoy, and we hate that it went down that way. We have more appearances scheduled at Big Fandom Greenville in November and will hopefully record enough of that to share at that time.

SCREAMING AT HORROR ADDICTS CROSSOVER!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It’s officially October now, and everyone and everything to do with horror is kickin’ into high gear for the spookiest part of the year. Young’ns are huntin’ for the scariest costumes, creepers are turnin’ their homes into death shrines, and folks are lookin’ to us horror hosts to tell them what terror’s worth watchin’ in preparation for Halloween!

One such dedicated gang of reviewers are the Horror Addicts, a spooky family of horror enthusiasts on YouTube whose love for all things horror rivals our own! After we joked to them a while back about reviewin’ a kiddie monster flick called Goobers as part of their Full Moon reviews, they said they would if we join them, and voila! Instant Halloween crossover special! What’s even cooler is our collaboration is now a part of their Shocktober Challenge which dares folks to review a horror movie a day with a few rules dictatin’ the number of sub-genres, directors, etc. to cover. Pretty sweet, huh? In other news, we are working as fast as we can to get the season finale done in time for Halloween. It’s takin’ a little longer than usual, because this is goin’ to be a BIG episode with a lot of fighting, explosions, review of the Toxic Avenger movies, and clues for what to expect next season. You won’ be disappointed, and we’ll keep you posted on any delays we could run into. We also got word we’ve been approved for some discussion panels at Big Fandom Greenville in November which will be fun with all the dirty stupid topics we pitched to jabber jaw about. Sexiest moments in horror and bad b-movie beasts is all we’ll let slip for now. Screaming Soup! will also be makin’ a special appearance at Alchemy Comedy on Friday the 13th, where we’ll share some stories with an improv group who’ll riff on everythin’ we say for fun. Plannin’ on gettin’ that recorded and uploaded’ before Halloween, fangs crossed.

SCREAMING AT MADWORLD!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Wow, this has been one exciting week as our show picks up steam, and the best holiday of the year rolls into its first full week. To kick it off right, we took a break from the craziness of the Full Moon/Troma war and accepted an invitation to a pretty impressive haunt that’s been buildin’ its own fanbase with bigger badder scares this Halloween.

If you’re anywhere near Madworld Haunted Attraction in Piedmont, SC, give yourself a treat and check it out! This place is built like a miniature theme park that offers differin’ levels of spooky entertainment for the whole family. Durin’ the day, young’ns can enjoy friendly hay mazes, tractor train rides, and pumpkin pickin’. But when night falls, scaredy cats can party to music around a bon fire with food trucks and free roamin’ ghouls while the brave get herded through a half mile of haunted hotels, asylums, swamps, farms, sewers, gas stations, and specialty rooms overrun by all manner of freaks and weirdos!

Madworld’s also introducin’ a cool new idea this year that’s sure to catch on with other haunts like wildfire. For the kiddies or oversized ‘fraidy cats, after payin’ the admission price to be scared, you can pay an additional $5 to scare the monsters! Awesome, right? Anyone wearin’ an specially branded LED necklace has the power to chase away any creatures they find too frightentin’ durin’ the haunt and even on the grounds when chillin’ out by the bon fire to eat their grub in peace. We wonder if that works on ass clowns and toxic mutants too?

Madworld is lots of fun, worth the deniro, and be sure to take a friend as a human shield!

SCREAMING AT 2017’S IT!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! As you must have heard, the new IT remake did really well at the box office openin’ weekend, and people are goin’ goofy over it! For those who care, we have our own two cents to share on the flick, and who better to present it than our favorite ghost girlfriend, Mandy! Copied over from her blog Mandy’s Screaming Reviews, here’s our thoughts!

The much-anticipated remake of Stephen King’s coulrophobic classic did not disappoint! In fact, IT (2017) is the most exciting retelling—dare we say in at least 27 years?

True to the original novel and the 1990 TV miniseries, IT assembles the best kid cast since Stand by Me (Yes, we’ve seen Stranger Things) and avoids useless updates like changes in race or gender. Two members of The Losers Club, later known as Lucky 7, were packing personality punches we knew they had in them all along.

Sophia Lillis plays a more mature, less wholesome version of Beverly Marsh, but before you start worrying about Bevvy—worrying a lot—we assure you IT’s producers did not do to Bevvy what Rob Zombie did to Laurie Strode and her gal pals. A few F-bombs are harmlessly and hilariously tossed by quick-witted Richie Tozier, whose eccentricities are effortlessly brought to life by Stranger Things sensation Finn Wolfhard. The real surprise is Jack Dylan Grazer whose version of Eddie Kapsbrak is less frail and more delightfully neurotic. He still has his inhaler—along with a fanny pack and a backup fanny pack—but he eagerly sheds the shackles of hypochondria that were placed on him by his controlling mother.

Speaking of fanny packs …

One savvy switch-up for today’s audiences was the shift from the 1950s to the 1980s. The vocabulary was never gratuitously grody, and the wardrobe didn’t pop like a neon Wham shirt. The homages are apt and unexpected. Bully Henry Bowers sports a mullet versus the greaser style, but every look, every bit of language, and every location contribute to the doomed, small-town setting that resonates throughout time with King’s fans. Isn’t that what a great story—in all ITs adaptions and iterations—is supposed to do?

In his book On Writing, King says there is no “Idea Dump, no Story Central, no Island of Buried Bestsellers.” He indicates that creative writing is almost a fallacy, and the only way to make something new under the sun is to bring previously unrelated ideas together in one’s own way. King did that in the novel IT, telling a familiar story of childhood fears and friendships that featured killer clown Pennywise, whose very name is a juxtaposition of the basic and the complex.

King is said to have told director Andy Muschietti he loved the licenses they took with IT (2017). Indeed, his New Line team does an incredible job of strengthening the house that Freddy built—and subsequently tarnished—with the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. They cut some things that perhaps weren’t worth repeating like the giant spider. Catch phrases like Beep beep, Richie are given a tap rather than a pounding, and concepts like the “deadlights” are shown rather than spoken. Scenes like the one in which Beverly’s sink spews blood are amped up to wow big screen audiences, but effect never overpowers story. Emotion is not an afterthought as demonstrated by Jaeden Lieberher’s (as Bill Denbrough) memorable monologue that inspires the gang to help him fight the monster that killed his little brother Georgie.

So many will be writing this week about Bill Skarsgård’s enthralling performance as Pennywise, our comments are unnecessary. Simply put, he was undeniable in the gritty Netflix series Hemlock Grove, but even with a family pedigree that includes brother Alexander (Eric Northman of True Blood), Deadwest and I didn’t expect him to make the horror hall of fame this fast. As a side note, their famous dad, Stellan, once delivered a line that explains why many victims become just that. Portraying a serial killer in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, he says that people’s fear of offending is often greater than their fear of pain. Remember that the next time a stranger with a funny face offers you a balloon, Scream Freaks!

DW and I are heading to the casting couch now to choose our fantasy line-up for the IT sequel that will have the Lucky 7 fighting the monster again as adults. Check back for more on that, and if you haven’t already, go get the sh-IT scared out of you at your local theater this week!

SCREAMING AT KILLER CLOWNS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! With the premier of Stephen King’s new It this week, we’ve been kickin’ our boots up and rewatchin’ some of our favorite slap happy flicks featurin’ horror’s scariest grease face slashers. We’ve obviously had our fill of annoyin’ ass-clowns with Buzzkill in past seasons, but luckily that experience hasn’t diminished our appreciation for the funnier side of fear. Here’s a quick rundown of clowns we think are worth the price of admission!

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988)

An interstellar circus tent lands near a small town and one loyal boyfriend with the help of his ice cream truckin’ buddies must save his girl and the rest of the townsfolk from bein’ turned into cotton candy spun snacks for hungry e.t. clowns. This is an instant classic from the ’80s every B-movie fan’s gotta see, because it’s burstin’ with awesome special effects, fun characters worth rootin’ for, and an all around fresh take on the all too familiar small town invasion story. Balloon bloodhounds, nabbed dogs, dangerous shadow puppets, sinister puppet shows, clown girls with bustin’ bosoms, corrosive pies, human puppet shows, giant clown tops, big ass dino-clowns, meltin’ security guards, popcorn guns, e.t. growin’ kernels, pizza delivery ambushes, body snatchin’ parades, ball prisons, compact clown cars, street fightin’ decapitations, and funny road rages! 5/5! 

xstitSTITCHES (2012)

If Sam Raimi and Tim Burton worked together on a killer clown flick, this Irish horror would be it! After accidentally dying at a young kid’s birthday party, Stitches the clown returns from the grave 6 years later to complete his performance with some new deadly gags as the kids reunite for a high school house party. I cannot begin to describe how awesome this movie is! It’s kinetic, beautifully shot, has a memorable cast of characters, unforgettable kills, gore, new ideas I haven’t seen before, and lots of laugh out loud moments! Exploding heads, scooped brains, umbrella deaths, eye gouging, go-go gadget arms, victim seeking nose, ventriloquist corpses, peeping tree house toms, clown funerals, clown sex, eye eating, clown crypt, tricycle chases, eternal eggs, speeding clown cars, and decapitations! 5/5!

IT (1990)

30 years after defeatin’ a young’n killin’ clown that preyed on their fears like Freddy Krueger, a gang of childhood friends reunite for the final showdown when they hear their hometown’s supernatural terror has returned from the sewers. Amazingly, this iconic TV mini-series holds up after all these years, and that’s thanks to such a timeless story about friendship and childhood fears with a compellin’ cast easily makin’ you feel the terror of bein’ harassed by a sinister clown that’s really an alien . . . or a big ass spider . . . maybe a spotlight? Hell, it’s fear incarnate or some bullshit like that, but regardless, a great flick. Sewer clowns, asthma defenses, great drain escapes, clowns in the shower, kiss and make-up tricks, whore worthy moments, imaginary annoyances, light snacks, manipulated minions, crazy escape plans, stabbin’s, dead young’ns, talkin’ skeletons, bloody balloons, library gags, misfortune cookies, slingshot silver, mutilated bodies, wife nappin’, near death therapy, rub-a-dub suicides, talkin’ heads in a fridge, haggish daddy issues, live action scrap books, bloody sinks, and wolfman disguises! 4/5!

DRIVE THRU (2007)

A high school girl is stalked by a fast food mascot named Horny who’s the murderous reincarnation of a classmate her mom accidentally killed years before. A killer clown flick that deserves waaay more attention, this unsung horror has a solid story, slick cinematography, and a sequel worthy killer with a memorable look. Ball pit terror, drive thru ambushes, haunted house ambushes, heads in microwaves, hung classmates, meat cleaver hackin’, possessions, human matchsticks, séances, stabbin’s, decapitations, and dead surprise parties! 4/5!

KILLJOY 3 (2010)

The game changin’ sequel that turns the Killjoy series around for the better, Full Moon’s demonic slasher is trapped in a magic mirror with his newly created hench clowns and preys on a gang of unsuspectin’ college students whose souls will help him escape. This is Killjoy at his best with a near flawless story, smart victims, memorable kills, and unforgettable villains. Invisible Siamese mimes, body painted succubae, boxin’ mad clown bums, magical forcefields, insta-hench recipes, adventures in house sittin’, dark funny romances, fart gags, flesh eatin’ feasts, decapitations, eye gougin’, face rippin’, ghost kids, name callin’, and humorous rituals! 4/5!

There you have it, Scream Freaks! Our top picks for killer clown flicks sure to tickle your twisted funnybone. Obviously there’s a lot more silly slashers out there you might think are missin’ from this list, but these are the sickos we think stay funny no matter how many times you watch them. Who’s at the top of your evil jester list? Or better yet, what’s the worst killer clown movie you’ve ever seen and need to warn everyone to avoid? We want to know!

SCREAMING AT THE BEARDED ONES PODCAST!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! If you wait long enough to catch the credits at the end of our shows, you’ll see names zippin’ by of some very talented voice actors. Most of them joined the show when we added a whole new roster of characters in Season 3, but with the epic war-torn story we’ve got for season 4, we had to reach out to even more talented folks gracious enough to lend their voices. While original characters are a cake walk to cast, it’s an entirely different beast findin’ folks who sound like a particular actor or character fans have expectations for. The hardest of these to cast were Jeffrey Combs’ Full Moon characters and the Toxic Avenger.

Luckily, after months of auditions, we finally found a couple of guys who could act and thankfully sound like these characters. Doug Powell plays all three of Jeffrey Combs’ alter egos (Dr. West, Dr. Tillinghast, and Dr. Mordrid), and Jason Underwood voices Toxie. It can be tricky impersonatin’ an actor playin’ multiple roles, but Doug pulled it off beautifully and far exceeded our hopes for capturin’ Combs deadpan theatrics we love so much. As for Jason, he was a natural for playin’ a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength.

As Troma fans know, there’s two ways to play Toxie. Boomin’ and heroic like in Toxic Avenger and Citizen Toxie or eagerly light-hearted like in Toxic Avenger 2-3 and the Toxic Crusaders cartoon series. It was a  tough call for which approach to take with Toxie, but we grew up watchin’ the cartoon series and simply enjoy Ron Fazio’s performance as the monstrous hero in parts two and three the most. With that in mind, we thought Jason was a shoe in for voicin’ New Jersey’s first superhero. We knew Jason had a genuine knack for comedy after seein’ him perform improv with his group Alchemy Comedy, fellow filmmakers showed us he could act in their short films, and he’s tall. Why’s bein’ tall matter? We think it helps sell Toxie’s voice more if comin’ from someone close to Toxie’s size and build that can deliver lines with the same resonance.

Anyway, Jason has a weekly podcast he does with his friend Evan Harris called The Bearded Ones, and unbeknown to us, he’s been promotin’ Screaming Soup! and sharin’ behind the scenes exclusives on playin’ Troma’s cash cow from time to time. We had to call the big guy out on this, and immediately return the favor with a shout out on our weekly blog here. Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Lock the doors and hurl your phones out the window, ’cause you ain’t gonna wanna be disturbed while watchin’ the next excitin’ entry in (indie film company not wantin’ free publicity) vs Full Moon! Yessir, after seven months of nail-bitin’ anxiety, we are proud to finally present the fellas you’ve been waitin’ for since the beginnin’ of this fantasy brawl . . . Andre Toulon’s puppets from Full Moon’s Puppet Master series!

Believe it or not, this is a series we’ve been wantin’ to review the most since startin’ Screaming Soup! Watchin’ so many horror hosts and YouTube reviewers over the years, we’ve seen different ones touch upon a few of the more popular Puppet Master flicks but never dig in with a fully comprehensive look at the entire series. That’s why we’re crankin’ things from 10 to 11 with a two-part ULTRA review that’ll chew the fat on EVERY Puppet Master flick made, includin’ (fangs crossed) Puppet Master Axis Termination! We’ll try for Puppet Master: Littlest Reich as well, but that’ll be tougher to get our hands on in time since another film company is makin’ it.

In the meantime, kick your feet up, enjoy some animated mayhem, and keep an eye out for the Dollman so you can win this month’s random Full Moon DVD with a piece of original Screaming Soup! artwork. SCREAMING AT SECONDARY VIDEOS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Another week, another marathon keepin’ the wheels rollin’ on our most epic season yet! We announced the arrival of Toulon’s teenie tiny assassins from the Puppet Master series for our next ultra review, and as excited as everyone’s been about that, some of you have been askin’ about our other vids that take a look at horror related comics and toons. Rest assured, this current season’s been a lot of work (3 years in the makin’!), but we’re doin’ our best to knock out some more Graphic Violence and Re-Animated Reviews before it’s all over!

We have all the comics and cartoons for different Troma and Full Moon properties and written reviews for each, but gettin’ to the video stage has been delayed a lot more than expected. We are plannin’ to review comics related one way or another to Herbet West from Re-Animator, we’ve got a complete review of every Puppet Master comic series to date with notes on how they work into the continuity of the Full Moon movies, and we collected every obscure Toxic Avenger related comic to review along with the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. So, it’s all in the works, and we’re gettin’ to it as fast as we can without sacrificin’ the quality of the regular animated episodes.

And with Halloween drawin’ closer, we’re addin’ more fun times to our schedule with different cameos and appearance comin’ up in the next couple of months. We already announced we’ll be doing a crossover video with our friends The Horror Addicts premierin’ in October, but we also have a crossover in the works for next season with Kaci the Homicidal Homemaker. We’re also brainstormin’ some horror related topics for panel discussions to attend at this years’ Big Fandom Greenville, and have an improv group invitin’ us to be special guests at one of their shows where they’ll perform improv inspired by clips from our show they’ll be playin’ on (duh duh DUH!) Friday the 13th this Halloween. That’s an event we’ll be sure to share with y’all!

SCREAMING AT NEWS AND UPDATES!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! New month, and the epic conclusion to the greatest battle to never happen draws closer with only 3 episodes left. Last episode left off with the tease for the final showdown between Troma and Full Moon, and we’re sure you’ve been rackin’ your brains figurin’ out which B-movie beasts will be tearin’ each other apart. Well . . . some of you have already figured it out, but we’ll clue the rest of you in.

As teased and promised for a while now, Full Moon’s Puppet Master gang will finally be makin’ their debut in this war to end all indie cinema. We’ll explain where they and the rest of Full Moon’s dolls have been this whole time, reveal Troma’s toxic picks for fightin’ them, and review the first six Puppet Master flicks in our first ever Ultra Edition of Screaming Soup! Yup, for those keepin’ track, Super Screaming Soup! is three reviews, Mega Screaming Soup! is four to five, and Ultra is six or more. And in the Puppet Master series’ case, it’s A LOT more with the rest of the series (includin’ Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys and hopefully the newest one(s)) scheduled for a review 9/20/17. That should certainly make up for their absence, huh?

In other news, we’ve just been contacted by Beta Max TV, and the Roku channel we were proud to call home for a few months is currently in the works for returnin’ to the airwaves! They originally tanked because of some messy technical difficulties, but Beta Max TV has climbed back in the saddle and plans on a revival of sorts with Beta Max TV 2.0. We’re first to jump in line and get our show back into the channel’s line-up and will hopefully be joined by our ol’ Beta Max buddies like Cinema Snob and The Mummy and the Monkey.
