SCREAMING AT GARBAGE PAIL KIDS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! In case you didn’t know, the ’80s was a major turning point for youngn’s entertainment. Not only was the toy market being driven by popular cartoons many criticized for being half hour commercials, but the wholesome family image began to slip, giving way to more gruesome forms of fun. There were crazy looking products of bizarre nature like Madballs, Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and most importantly . . . the Garbage Pail Kids!

In response to the Cabbage Patch Kids craze, Topps spoofed the cabbage cult with trading cards that mirrored the creepy dolls in horrifically twisted parodies and became a runaway success with the kiddies. Topps experienced popular responses to macabre cards before with their previous Mars Attacks! and Civil War News card sets back in the day, so they were more than familiar with what kind of dark images youngn’s wanted to see, and pumped out an ass load of them before petering out in the late ’80s.

Decades later, and we’re still enjoying these sick cards! The detailed art, the dark humor, the roster of unforgettable characters, and we still have lightning bolts of joy shoot through us every time we see new merchandise hit the shelves that’s 30 years overdue. And speaking of overdue, nothing was more so than the canceled Garbage Pail Kids cartoon series!

You read right. The same year the less than favorable GPK movie was released, CBS produced a Garbage Pail Kids cartoon series. Before the show could air on its first TV, however, the angry parents of yesteryear believed it would be every bit as despicable as the cards and convinced the CBS execs to give it the axe. Since then, it’s been locked away until receiving a second chance on DVD in the mid-2000s. Like a secret blast from the past, this shamed series is now up for grabs for all GPK fans such as ourselves, and we give it a look in the vid below to see just what all the fuss was about back then. Hope you enjoy it!

SCREAMING AT GODZILLA THE SERIES

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! So, I think there’s 2 kinds of horror fans in this world. Those who are fans of Godzilla and those who are die-hard fanatics of Godzilla. For instance, if you were the average horror lover who went to see America’s take on the G-man in 1998, you probably walked out of the theater thinking you got your buck’s worth of man vs monster runamuck entertainment. If you were a super fan of Godzilla, you probably tore the theater apart before running out and warning people away from a false god’s promises.

I personally like the ’98 movie, but guess what . . . I like killer tomato movies, so you know you have to take what I say with a spoonful of ketchup! Was it the greatest movie ever? Could my judgment be clouded by fond memories I have of other things happening at about that time? Am I even talking about the right film? No, sure, and most definitely. I like Godzilla, but I couldn’t name every movie or villain blindfolded, meaning I’m not one of the diehards. But as a stand alone film without comparing it to its lineage, I thought the US version was a solid 3/5 for sure.

It had a mega monster clawing through the Big Apple, a killer soundtrack I rank in my top 5, and spun a pretty cool cartoon series that is sure to impress even the harshest Godzilla critics. That’s right, this box-office bomb managed to spawn an animated series before its demise at the hands of the fans and critics, and picks the story right up with Matthew Broderick’s character discovering one surviving baby of Zilla’s, who he takes under his wing to battle every critter the size of a building. Great art, strong characters, and plenty of monster bashing, watch our newest entry in our Re-Animated Review series below, and give the show a chance.

SCREAMING AT SWAMP THING THE SERIES!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! We’re still on a comic kick after all the fun we had on Free Comic Book Day, so we thought we’d turn our attention to producing an all new Tribute video to spotlight one of our more favorite comic book heroes, Swamp Thing! Before I was formally introduced to the classic line-up of Universal monsters that were the staples of most horror fans’ childhoods, I was exposed to the exciting world of monsters through DC Comics’ Swamp Thing. He seemed to be everywhere when I was knee high to a grasshopper. He had 2 monster bashing movies, thought provoking comics for a more mature audience, a gimmicky toyline, a cartoon full of colorful characters, and a live action TV series which is the focus of our Tribute.

Only one man has dared to wear a thick rubber suit in sweltering Florida heat for hours at a time, and his name is Dick Durock. He was there with Wes Craven in the beginning, the charmingly campy sequel, and the 72 episode long series on the USA Network from 1990-93. While heavily dubbed and hidden behind the image of other actors playing Swamp Thing in his human form, Dick luckily got to shine in the TV series as a leading man and costume stuntman. Despite the series’ rocky start with it being more reminiscent of the Twilight Zone with Swamp Thing acting as host in the peripherals of stories, the series finally figured things out by season 2 and threw Swamp Thing more in the spotlight. Of course a hero is only as good as his arch nemesis and Swamp Thing’s is the mad genius, Anton Arcane. Stiffly portrayed by Louis Jourdan in the movies, Arcane was now a much livelier and thrilling character played by Mark Lindsay Chapman whose performance is unparalleled! We’re normally against seeing the good guy fight the same bad guy again and again, but we can’t get enough of Dick and Mark battling it out every episode. While Dick was in the previous movies, it was his chemistry with Mark in the series that inspired this Tribute video we’re proud to present now. Hope you enjoy!
