SCREAMING AT HALLOWEEN 2021!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks, and Happy Halloween!

Last we wrote y’all, we were in mad preparation fer an unforgettable night with one of the original Michael Myers, Tony Moran. Thanks to our amigos at our favorite toy chest for today and yesteryear’s playful plastics, Toy Federation, we were lucky ‘nough to kick off the holiday season hostin’ a QnA with Tony, whose claim to horror fame is playin’ Michael when he’s unmasked at the top of the stairs by Laurie in Halloween ’78. Needless to say, the night was electric!

After spending hours at Toy Federation with arms full of Myers memorabilia for Tony to grace with his John Hancock, Halloween die-hards eagerly followed the slasher of the hour over to the theater around the corner for even more unforgettable face time ‘fore kickin’ back to a candid QnA followed by a big-screen showin’ of Michael’s screen debut. There were Michael Myers cosplayers roamin’ the theater, folks teasin’ each other with the jingle from Halloween III, deep geek discussions over who Michael can whoop in a fight . . .

The highlight of the night fer us, however, was this one uber fan who rolled up without a clue what was even happenin’. With her car blinged out in bumper to bumper horror flick decals, we happily welcomed her, believin’ she could only be there for Tony and Halloween. Much to everyone’s surprise, she actually came to see Venom: Let There Be Carnage but began hyperventilatin’ at the mention of an actual Michael Myers actor makin’ an appearance. Things only escalated after she parked, ’cause she so happen to stroll up to the theater the same time Tony arrived, meltin’ her into a fan girl puddle. Ever grateful, Tony gave her one of the most genuinely down to Earth greetin’s we’ve ever seen from a celebrity and was kind ‘nough to sign the dashboard of her horror-themed ride with Michael proudly displayed ‘cross the top of the windshield. Class act if we say so ourselves.

After ‘nother round of photos and autographs in the lobby, we finally made our way to the theater to host the QnA, and let us tell ya —- Tony’s a hoot of a storyteller! Now, some convention videos on the web wanna spin Tony’s brash stories into portrayals of him bashin’ on the horror genre, its fans, and especially the Halloween franchise, but that’s all out of context. Tony does knock these things, but ’cause he’s sharin’ his initial thoughts and feelin’s as a twenty somethin’ actor bein’ cast in a little obscure horror flick. He admits he thought it was all nonsense 40 plus years ago, but has since come to appreciate the movie(s) and its impact on fans worldwide who he now has a deeper respect and love for.

So, after ’bout an hour of where-when-how he became involved in Halloween with reservations over wearin’ a mask in a non-speakin’ role for what he feared was a porno for a hot second (on account of a prominent jar of Vaseline that was actually used to prevent his hair from stickin’ to the inside of the mask), Tony gave his final heartfelt bow of the night and exited to a uproarious round of applause as the flick that brought him there began playin’ ‘cross the silver screen. It was a pretty memorable night, and we’ll be sharin’ video of it as soon as possible.

Even better, Tony teased at his involvement in the newest Myers flick, Halloween Kills, which most of us were pretty pumped ’bout this month. We say most, ’cause if you saw our latest Graphic Violence video reviewin’ every Halloween funny book ever published, then ya heard our rant on how dumb we think Laurie’s mission to kill Michael is now that they’re no longer related. We still had alotta respect fer the 2018 resequel, however, and was moderately anxious to see the latest installment in this revised timeline of the Halloween continuity. Already goin’ in with low expectations, no one could’ve prepared us fer the dumpster fire of a storyline we would witness!

HALLOWEEN KILLS (2021)

An immediate follow-up to Michael Myers’ newest mulligan timeline introduced in 2018’s Halloween, the infamous bogeyman remains at large and continues ruinin’ Halloween for everyone in Haddonfield with an indifferent murder spree that gains the attention of a town wide lynch mob led by survivors of Michael’s first holiday massacre in 1978. Easily one of my least favorite sequels ‘mong the Halloween movies, Halloween Kills is just a string of ridiculous moments that feels like some teenager’s attempt at fan fiction that’s neither fun or rewatchable. The dialogue’s wildly over the top and repetitive (“Evil dies tonight!), there’s way too many folks spillin’ a buncha needless exposition, most the characters returnin’ from the ’78 flick are shoehorned in as opposed to bein’ organically introduced with an actual role to play, there’s the stupidest case of mistaken identity that drags out waaay too long in the middle, and the biggest dick slap to the mug is the anti-claimatic endin’ the movie spends its whole runnin’ time buildin’ up to. Besides an impressive stand-in for Loomis in flashbacks and the funny scenes of the couple livin’ in the Myers house, the only positive thing I can say ‘about this farce is it absolutely delivers what the title promises, and that’s a non-stop gore-fest of brutal deaths that’s perfect for background horror at Halloween parties. Stabbin’ galore, vigilante justice, street pizzas, fatal freefall suicides, head smashin’ galore, home invadin’, carjackin’, house infernos, firefighter massacres, axes to the face, saws to the fact, lotta broken windows, impaled faces, keep away, turkey baster injections of courage, gushin’ neck wounds, gunshots to the chest, and panicked mobs! 3/5!

Thank Craven we at least had Chucky to save Halloween this year with his new show on Syfy/USA. That sucker’s a homerun in our opinion! The last couple of movies struggled to back off the laughs in favor of the fear inducin’ tension the first three Child’s Play flicks had, but this series perfectly strikes that delicate balance with dark nerve wrackin’ humor as well rounded characters are given meaningful deaths in contrast to Chucky’s laughable antics. If you recall our previous posts, we threw our hats in the ring to be one of the few lucky artists hired to animate show bumpers and design thumbnails fer the episodes, but we’ll be damned if any of that’s been seen anywhere yet. What’s up with that?

In other news, we got some Halloween goodies fer y’all! Below you’ll find our newest Halloween Eeeh-Cards! fer y’all to share with yer friends and frienemies, and we just released our latest horror celebrity interview with none other than Roger Jackson, the creepy voice of Ghostface from the Scream franchise! SCREAMING AT HALLOWEEN COMICS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Trick ‘r treat, smell our feet, and give us somethin’ good to review! The Halloween season is upon us, and what better way to break it in than with an in depth look at Michael Myers’ stint in the funny books as everyone’s favorite killer shape.

Yessir, we’ve been mired in Michael’s continuin’ murder spree as a sequential slasher, and what a turbulent history it is. From indie publications to mainstream comic racks, these graphic exploitations are just as controversial to the splintered Halloween continuity as they are gore-tastic reads. We cover the sweet return of some of Halloween’s most popular characters, wince at the sours of some ridiculous retcons, and lap up the amazin’ artwork it’s all told through.

And if that weren’t ‘nough, we go deep into the talents behind these various publications and the events they were tied to, gloss over each comics’ impact on Halloween’s competin’ timelines, and give our two scents on the newer 2018 requels while throwin’ in stuff ’bout the young adult novels for a bonus. What more could you possibly ask for?!

Phew! After all that work, you’d think we’d be sick and tired of Billy Shatner’s disfigured mug in our faces, but Michael ain’t done with us yet. Thanks to our amigos over at our favorite toy chest of yesteryear and today’s playful plastics, Toy Federation, we’ll be spendin’ this Friday, October 1st, with none other than Tony Moran (aka Michael without his mask at the top of the staircase in the 1978 Halloween), and hostin’ his QnA with fans ‘fore enjoyin’ a late night screenin’ of John Carpenter’s original masterpiece that started it all. Who could ask for a better way to kick off our favorite holiday, right?

It’s gonna be a killer time, so if ya happen to be in the neighborhood, stop on by and catch us all at Camelot Cinemas in Greenville, SC. Find all the details HERE

SCREAMING AT HALLOWEEN 2018

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Yee-ow! Our ears are burnin’, and we think it’s ’cause y’all wanna know if we saw the new Halloween do-over yet and what we thought of it. Well, we sure as shootin’ saw that sucker the second it hit the silver screams in our parts, and let us tell ya . . . it ain’t bad!

We had our hang-ups goin’ into this shake-up of such a beloved horror series, but we survived Halloween: H20 and Rob Zombie’s attempts at resettin’ the Halloween timeline, so how much worse could this be? Honestly, we think the trailers come off kind of silly lookin’ like Laurie’s been sittin’ on her porch with a shotgun for 40 years, waitin’ for Michael to come after her like he’s set to go off on significant anniversaries of that infamous night from ’78. Makes sense if Michael and Laurie still had that siblin’ rivalry revealed in the original part two from ’81, but we knew goin’ into this flick the filmmakers nixed all that, leavin’ Michael without any motivation for bein’ obsessed with a random girl he tried to kill one night.

Havin’ seen the movie now, the characters and their motivations make sense and the story’s not quite as ludicrous as the trailers hint. For starters, all the waitin’ and paranoia bullshit completely stems from Laurie who suffers from some serious post traumatic stress the last 40 years. She’s a damaged character who is just mentally ruined by that night in ’78 and copes by bein’ a survivalist nut while buildin’ up Michael’s bogeyman lore the same way Dr. Loomis did in past movies. In reality, or at least the way we see it, Michael’s just been chillin’ at Smith’s Grove Sanitarium these last 40 years, probably never even thinkin’ ’bout that one girl that got away. In fact, nothin’ he does is motivated or even aimed at Laurie or her family. Without seein’ or hearin’ from Laurie since ’78, Michael simply escapes a bus transportin’ him to a maximum security prison and then kills folks left and right without rhyme or reason like a shark attackin’ anythin’ that moves. He coincidentally runs into a lot of folks associated with Laurie’s family which makes sense for a small town, but the only reason he reunites with Laurie is due to outside forces literally puttin’ her in his homicidal path. Michael was never huntin’ her ’til he was practically dumped at her doorstep.

The film’s good overall. Mandy loved it, givin’ it her own 5/5, but we agree there’s some questionable castin’ and were a little frustrated at first when it seems Laurie’s 40 year master plan is to shoot Michael in the face which goes south pretty quick. We don’t like how much of old man Michael we see without his mask, but was impressed with the filmmakers keepin’ with the continuity of his eye bein’ fucked up from Laurie stabbin’ him with the coat hanger in the original film. And while they do away with all the supernatural thorn cult stuff that supposedly explained why Michael was such an invincible super slasher, he’s still a killer with juggernaut strength like in Halloween 4, crushin’ skulls and bustin’ through barriers.

What’s a little disappointin’ is the level of involvement from the original talents and filmmakers from Halloween ’78 that initially got fans like us excited for this reinvention of the franchise. Namely director John Carpenter, and Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle reprisin’ their iconic roles as Laurie and the shape. Carpenter’s only back in the game as an executive producer, leavin’ the directin’ and writin’ to newer blood, but makes his presence felt as one of the three composers providin’ a synth score that reinvigorates the original theme he created decades ago. It’s always fun to watch Jamie fight Michael again, but we already blew our comeback load with H20, so this repeat performance is already tainted by that, even with her new approach to playin’ Laurie as an agoraphobic survivalist. Her co-star Nick Castle jumps back in the coveralls to resume his gig as one of the many folks to play Michael in ’78, but just like then, he shares the role with another actor in the 2018 version, makin’ it almost impossible to know when it’s him for nostalgic enjoyment.

The pros greatly outweigh the cons, however, and we promise ya the movie is worth the ticket of admission and a great way to celebrate this Halloween season. It’ll definitely be some time before we can process how it compares to the past movies and where it fits on our list of best to worst Myers films though. But in the meantime, Mandy’s already wantin’ to see it a second time, and we’re not far behind her!

SCREAMING AT TIME WARP HANGOVERS AND HALLOWEEN COMIC REVIEWS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! Gonna keep this one short, ’cause we’re still recoverin’ from a mighty impressive production of “Rocky Horror Show” last night that had more dry humpin’ action than a lover’s lane packed with high school virgins on a Friday night! Now, we’ve been to numerous midnight movie rodeos to see this kooky celebration before, but this was pretty excitin’ stuff, ’cause it was our first time watchin’ it performed as a stage play versus a shadow cast mimickin’ a movie screen behind them. Luckily, the audience was still allowed to shout all the classic profanities when cued with hands full of props and alcohol, makin’ this an experience we won’t soon forget. Lots of impressive singin’, ingenious use of space, and it definitely had the most attractive and talented cast of yahoos we’ve ever seen parade around in sci-fi drag for this tireless cult phenomenon!

Anyway, for those on the edge of their bar stool waitin’ for the next excitin’ episode of Screaming Soup!, rest easy, ’cause it’s comin’. We’re tryin’ to wrap it up before we start on the next parody ad for Full Moon’s Dollman Kills the Full Moon Universe comic, and we’re already 2/3 through the animation. Woo doggy, we can’t wait for y’all to see what’s comin’! We’ve been experimentin’ with some new special effects that’re makin’ the animation look so good, we’re committin’ to this bein’ the best episode we’ve produced yet! There’s new villains, more danger, and a sneak peek at the literal hell to come for our gang.

On a side note, once we’re done with this episode, we’re strongly considerin’ doin’ a Graphic Violence video for Michael Myers’s run of comics in time for the new Halloween flick. Don’t hold us to it just yet, but we do have everyone of his comics and just finished rereadin’ them for all the notes so we can start writin’ a script. From Myers’s original foray into the funny books to his last sequential killin’ spree, we’ll discuss each series’ stories and their significance to the Halloween movies and their different timelines.

SCREAMING AT SAW:REBIRTH!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! It ain’t even Halloween yet, and we already have a treat for you wicked folks out there. Looking at the calendar, its due time for us to review more horror comics in another insightful Graphic Violence video, and this time we set our sights on the one and only Saw comic published by IDW in 2005. Given the success of this franchise that ruled Halloween for most of the 2000’s, I’m surprised this didn’t have more of a splash in the comic world with one shots or spin-off mini-series. Hell, Leprechaun got several issues during its brief stint into comics and which is more deserving of the two? So, if you’re a fan of the Saw movies as well as a collector of all things Jigsaw, give the review below a look and see if this is something you just gotta have!

Be sure you’re caught up with the rest of Screaming Soup! Season 2 and use our social buttons in the upper right corner of the site and follow our tweets, subscribe to our Youtube channel, like our Facebook, watch and share all our vids, and keep that fan mail coming. New screen captures have been added to the gallery.

That’s pretty much it for now, so I’ll see ya’ later Scream Freaks!
